New IRN but need help taming, PLEASE HELP!
Hello i have recently become an owner of an IRN but i belive it to be 12-18 months old, It has never been hand held as far as i know? Since bringing it home, it has looked very scared. Any very basic training would be great i have a great love for birds and hope that this will be a long and mabe hard relationship, thankyou all Luke.
hi congrate on your new bird
i would first start with getting him/her?
to trust you feed treats talk to him go slo9wly & be very patient
on thing i was told when we gotr our first one was set the cage up in a room where you spend alot of time so they can gbet to know you while your not totally focused on them and to eat in front of them .........nothing gets the attention if irns like food!!
so i sat my bird cage in the lounge room so they could watch us watching telly, on the computor nd when the kids get home from school i set out a fruit platter i soon has the birds contact calling the minute the school bus pulled up because they knew the fruit was ready as soon as they kids got inside they would be feed!!!!!!
im presently in the same situation as you i got a new bub the weekend before last & pickles a total panic merchant!!!!as soon as i go in the birds room he freezes & just stares at me as if to say what horrible thing are yiou going to do to me today?
so i just put his treats in a bowl in his cage ive got a chair set up in there so i can have a cuppa & biccies and i let my hand reared baby skeet out for cuddles while talking to pickle
and when i give skeet a "yummy" i say yummy for skeet
then i drop a treat in pickles food bowl & say yummy for pickle
(this gets him used to his name)
the keys to a long lastying friendship with yiour irn are patience, perserverance & food
strangley the best food i found for rewarding positive behavoir from your bird is brocoli but as you get to know your bird you may find he likes something else more
good luck & keep us posted

I am also in the same boat that you are in. My IRN is about two years old and had previous owners. I kept offering tasty, healthy treats everytime that I passed the cage and talked softly with him. I sit next to the cage and read, etc. The bird does not run and will take food from me know, but I am now in the process of trying to get him to step on my hand. Good Luck!

Thanks for your comments, Billy is his name, and he is in our front room, and we talk to him everytime we pass the cage in a soft tone. He's moving about a bit more, we've let him out of his cage for a bit of exercise and he loved it, flying on to the blind and back on top his cage. I then put my arm out like a perch and he even flew on to this a couple of times, very exciting
It was all good until we had to get him back in the cage, which was a struggle
. Was this a good idea??? Whats the best method of finding what treats he likes? put them on a dish and see which one he favours the most??? Thanks for your help good to hear from other people. Luke and my IRN, Billy,
