bird cage with cats

Post by Becx »

Hi,

I've got to get a new cage for my bird, as he has been in a small one which i loaned from a friend (he was a rescue bird). Its been ok because he dosn't have long tail feathers yet, but they are growing.

i have 2 cats and so far have been able to easily move his cage around with me (its light and portable), so that he is never alone with the cats.

But if i get a bigger cage, obviously it's going to be too heavy to lug up stairs with me.

Does anyone have any suggestions of the best type/shape of cage to get if you have got cats?

Thanks
Bec

I honestly don't know what you could do to keep the cats away. What I do know is that the cats shouldn't be able to get near the bird, they could easily frighten the bird to death if they are able to get near it.

My cats are fine if they come inside, although i never leave them alone,
my birds look at one of my cats through the glass door and lunge at her, it's actually quite funny, the cat gets a bit of a scare lol
the birds are never out when the cats are in of course!
My big boy Oscar loves to sleep on the shelf under the cage
i am not sure wether he is protecting or waiting for something lol
All my animals are pretty good with each other as long as you introduce them right, and always keep an eye on them!
If you get a good cage the cat shouldn't be able to get in or knock it down but still be aware that anything is possible if your cat is determined to get at it

might be worth getting a cage where the bars arent wide apart, close enough for a cat not to get a paw through if they do get on or near the cage

We have two cats and when we first brought Choco home our resident Minor bird killer decided he'd like to suss Choco out by climbing his cage! After taking him off and telling him "No" in a growl-y voice he never tried again, but often lingered around just trying to work out what the bird and his cage were all about. Our other cat had no interest in the new bird at all until the time when Choco was gradually learning to trust us and his new surroundings (out of his cage), went up and sniffed at his tail, got a squark and a quick peck on his nose. Both cats stay away from Choco when he is out because- they know they'll get told off for even a wrong sideways look! And off course Chocobo can really do some damage with that beak- I never leave them unsupervised while Chocobos out of his cage.

Our cage is about 5ft tall and about 2ft wide- We have it out on our patio with our cats during the day.
