Just wondering what the use for those things i keep seeing around their ankles are they really necessary????
They serve more the breeder and for identification purposes than anything else.
Proper record tracking / keeping requires leg bands so you know which blue is which and from what clutch etc... and it is also quite helpful in acting like an I.D. incase your bird ends up lost and found.
Some of the more professional leg band setups (like I use) have a name ID and number on it. I then send that leg band ID to all vets around the town. This way, if a bird of mine (or one i have sold) ends up at a vet as lost, i can look through my records and see who I sold it to. Making tracking down owners quite easy.
So far I have helped just one person using this method, but I think it was more than worth it for just that one time really.
