Babies have no pins at 2 weeks of age

Post by wingshaw »

Hi,
I'm new here but I'd like to introduce myself as a pretty "experienced in birds" person, unfortunately I am not, I learn something new every day from them.
I am especially torn over the 3 Indian Ringneck babies I pulled from the parents due to not feeding. When I pulled them each at day 1, I gave them only Pedialyte and a Papaya enzyme and Lactobacillus vitamin mixture for the day. When each of them were 2 days old I started to give them the Roudybush formula-very thin and runny mixture, now I am feeding Exact to them as it has more nutrients but it was way too thick and gritty for their tiny digestive systems in the beginning. In the past week I have noticed their size get larger but no pins yet. I should see something right? Nothing is there but little down feathers here and there and these babies are all 2 weeks today (the oldest is 2 weeks, 4 days). What am I doing wrong? I have adjusted the humidity and heat several times, I feed them every 3 hours, they appear to be healthy and getting more coordinated each day but no pins and nor any sign of pins.
Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations? I'm about out of answers.
Thanks,
Shawn

Hi once again,
I am starting to see signs of feathering now and pigment coming in on my non-albino baby. Whew...glad to see that!
I am almost certain it was due to "lack of" in their formula. Exact definitely has more fat and protein in it (such as beef pulp and whole egg food). Amazing! From what I have read, I found out that this "Lack of"can only slow down the growth and developing process. Just thought I'd share this with you all so that you know that "Yes, Exact is (to my knowledge), so far, the best on the market". I fed all of my Lovebird babies with it and I had only changed to Roudybush because it's smoother but I have learned how to make Exact smoother too.
All I can say is if it isn't broken, don't fix it!
Thanks for listening 8) ,
Shawn

Hello Wingshaw, it's great to hear that their feathers are growing. I know it's all late because it's August already, but i just got into this thing, i'm new. Hope to hear how those chicks are doing.

They are doing wonderful now and their little pins are slowly errupting from the skin now and I can almost say that the non-albino one is going to be a grey. They're going to be gorgeous. I was really down on myself for not knowing what to do but I pulled them through and I'm so happy now. :) I have added "Spriulina" (a vitamin supplement that aids in feather growth and is also given to moulting birds) to their formula and their growing like weeds and their feather shafts are so healthy and strong. I really wanted mom and dad to raise these guys for a couple of weeks. Was I in for a shock for my first clutch. Whew...Thanks to a gentleman that I bought the albino male from, I have been guided in this whole situation. He is man that definitely cares about his birds.
Thanks so much for your concern,
Shawn
P.S. So tell me about your birds.

I completely agree..... Exact is the best on the market. My baby is a little fatty and she LOVED that stuff. She is weened now and I miss the hand feedings. Odd how something I thought would be a pain in the butt was actually a wonderful and fun thing to do. Really miss it.

Hello Mikaela,
Yes, it is a great way of therapy for me to do the handfeeding. It has become a passion of mine. I use to be a vet tech and it was just too fast paced for me.
I had a dry breeing spell with my Lovebirds for a while and gosh, did I ever miss it. I will never go back to any other formula. I love Exact now more than ever.
What mutation is your little girl?

Hello Shawn and Mikaela,

Well i own a green male IRN, he has really beautiful plumage, with all his rings that he got not long ago. I really like him, and i'm looking for a girl for him, that's how i got to this website.
I also own some budgies. They are such little breeders, but did not breed this time, because of the hurricane that was coming this way, over here at southern texas. I guess they got scared. But they are all ok and doing fine.

Hey Jonathan,
Is he a pet or a breeder? What I mean to say is, I guess, is he tame? Or you just like his colors/plumage so well that you think he'd be a good breeder? There are plenty of breeders out that way that you could probably ask for a breeder bird from. I belong to a ringneck group that you could go to on Yahoo called rareringnecks. The owner of the group has a website called GIRBA (Global Indian Ringneck Breeders Association). You can probably find it in those words in the search bar. He lives in Texas and could probably find you someone either through the group or on his website if you ask him. His email address is on his website and tell him I sent you. Good luck with that and keep me posted. Just a little more info for you to look at if you wish.
Thanks,
Shawn
