Hi everyone,
My little ringneck is about three months old now. I've had her home for almost 2 weeks and since she has been here she makes predominantly one noise. It sounds almost like a kitten crying, and she doesn't really make any other noises. The only other time I hear her make a different noise is when I'm talking or singing with my tiel, Pidget. In what I imagine might be a jealous state she begins to make a grumbling squawk and this is the only other time I hear her make a noise (I assume its jealousy because her eyes pin and she has tried to go lunge after him beak first when she has gotten a chance, and only of course when I am paying attention to him).
So I guess I have 2 questions:
1. Is this crying normal? She seems happy, but it is not a happy noise she seems to be making... Also, did any of your ringnecks predominate with one noise before making any other "bird" noises?
2. What is the best way to handle her "jealosy" of my tiel? I'm not sure if yelling "no, no !! bad bird!!" is the most effective strategy....
Thanks

Hi Aves welcome!!
1- It's not crying she's doing it's just a noise they do to get attention we however make it out to be anything we want. She will make all kinds of funny noises before they really learn how to speak. They will also practice talking while they have their heads tucked in their wings.
2- If one is jealous over the other don't have them out at the same time. They enjoy one on one interaction. Never yell any words, parrots thrive on any kind of reaction they can get and if you yell no no to her your enforcing that behavior weather it be good or bad they don't care. All they care about is getting a reaction from you. Hope this helps and their are tons more people that will help you here with what ever problems you have.
Good Luck Donna

Thanks Donna,
That surely helps. I can see where the lingering of this noise is brought on by the attention I give her as a result of it. Its the cutest darn noise, and does sound kinda sad, so I was a sucker, being that she's my first ringneck, and that I want to "console" her when she's "sad". She came from a very nice avian pet store where she was the only ringneck, raised with a clutch (I think that's what you call it) of quaker babies and being the beautiful blue fox she was she snagged attention from everyone there. Anyways, the first few days I would hold her to my chest and pet her until she stopped "crying" and now like clockwork she does it when I walk in the door from work, or when (I imagine) she wants something. I couldn't ask for a better bird though, she's just great really. I'd just like to see what her "big bird" voice sounds like, heheh.
As far as her and Pidget I have started giving them separate cuddle times with mom or daddy will take Levi and I'll take Pidget (across the room, heheh).
Well thanks again, and I will try to make light of Levi's cries so that she can try some new sounds...

Donna,
Thanks for the advice. It's been working out. Now that they both get their own special time Levi has stopped going after Pidget. I can even have them both out at the same time and she's pretty good about it. I can catch her schemeing about it sometimes but she knows not to actual go after him now.

Thats right, they crave reactions! Yelling anything at them does not work. Its what they want. Us IRN owners need a little 'selective hearing'. If a noise is annoying ignore it.
They will make any weird noise for attention. Its so funny. Yoda barks like a dog and makes various 'clicking' and 'OooOoo' sounds.
Make sure you spend equal time with each bird. Maybe separate play times is best in your situation. Make sure Pidget knows hes still valued. They might also be just working out their 'pecking order'.
I introduced my 2 slowly over a few weeks and I still kepy Jibbys routine with me the same so he didnt think he was missing out.
