Just got my IRN and I have a question...

Post by Peanut »

We just got our first IRN a month ago. We don't know if it is a boy or a girl yet. I noticed that our bird is getting some small, black, hair-like feathers going from its beak to its eye. Is this the IRN's sex coming out? I seen that boy IRN's have black there. Our IRN is only 9 months old now, I dont know when they get their ring IF they get one. Can anybody help me?? Our IRN was like a grey/turquoise color when we got it, and now its getting more green on its head, around its legs, and some on its back. These blackish hair-like feathers have just come out in the last week or so.. Can anybody please tell me whats going on??? Some of its actions are it tries to talk, LOVES its self in the mirror, VERY vocal, and it doesn't cock its head back or make "kooing" noises when we rub/pet it. HELP :?: :?: :?:  Im stumped.

This has me stumped as well. My little new IRN has the same thing going on but I don't know the age, so I am right now guessing it to be a female. I would love to know the answer to this question as well.

Some female IRN's can sport shadows of rings, the small black line across the bridge of the beak could also just be a shadow that a female can bare but does sound like more of a male mark to me.

The loving itself in the mirror might be a good behaviour to watch as the boys will begin to do very exotic dances to themselves in a mirror, arching their heads up, pinning their eyes and opening the shoulders of their wings making a particular repetative call, they will even hop along the ground tapping their beak.

Males will begin to get their ring from as early as 17 months but usually it will begin from 2 years and be fully complete by 3 years, although some I have heard began closer to 3 years. So if your IRN is older than 3 I would suggest girl.

DNA is the only way to know for sure.

Here is a link to a thread on behaviour (I posted vids of male and female behaviour a while ago when I was known as angie here) and there is information about DNA testing.
