Are headshapes different between make and female?

So I was looking at these 2 chicks that haven't been sexed yet.



And the one on the left has a distinctly broader head than the one on the right. Or maybe it's just a trick of the angle.

But the difference is obvious between this breeding pair.



So I was wondering whether it was ever possible to tell male from female when they are babies by headshape, or if it's likely to be either an optical illusion, or just an individual characteristic of that one chick.

I have read somewhere that there was a way to tell without the ring... or at least it was a slight indicator.. but I do believe it was said that the males might have a more square shaped head, but the difference is so subtle that you can't really tell for sure.. chances are it's not true.. and if it is true it wouldn't be reliable enough to tell...

fact is, you have to have them tested or just sell them off as random surprises.

I've always thought a squarer head, broader beak, flatter forehead, indicates a male. But it has been wrong before I do see the difference though

I believe the breeding pair was found to be a cinnamon blue male and a pallid blue hen. Those chicks are a sf violet and a df violet.

An easy way to check is if the eyes are facing forwards then it is a male and it the eyes are facing backwards it is a female.

yep. totally unrelated.

I was going to get a blue chick from that pair, but that didn't work out. So now I am getting the df violet chick. Should be old enough just in time for christmas.
