Hand raising Question

Post by dkuhr »

I am hand feeding an IRN from 2 days old. It is now 2 1/2 weeks old and the outer skin has not split over the eyes. I can see it blinking under the skin but the outer skin still has not opened. Is this a problem? Is there anything that can be done? Thanks Dave

The only suggestion I have is to take your baby to the vet, there might be a problem and your vet would be the best one to deal with it. I'm not sure when IRN babies open their eyes but they should definatly be open by 2 and a half weeks.

You should check to make sure nothing has sealed them closed like stray formula and so on. Maybe wipe them with a wet cloth and see if you can massage them open gently. Again I would check with the vet first just to be sure.

Perhaps even just call them, say you have a baby IRN and explain your problem and ask for a reccomendation. Ask if there is something you can do or if you should bring it in to the vet.

They should open at around 10 days.
I would suggest getting a nice soft cloth and dipping it is lukewarm water, then gently rub the eyes with it.
If that doesn't work, i would get it checked out by an avian vet

Thanks for the input. I have made sure there is no formula. I have tried the soft damp cloth. I guess I will call the vet. I was just checking to see if anyone else had run into this. Thanks again
