Hi from NZ

Post by katchafire »

hi everyone, thought I would join up and say hi. I have just adopted myself a lovely young lutino ringneck. His/her name is Sunny he/she is 3 months old handraised, hes unfortunately only got the use of one wing as it was damaged in the nest box (apparently) its quite deformed and has no chance of flying  but that doesnt seem to hold him back hes a very forward out going little thing. Still a little nervous of my hands and bitey (though not breaking the skin) so possibly bluffing hard to know as Ive only had him 3days. But in those 3 days I already love him to pieces. Arent they fabulous birds.

hi and WELCOME!

Shame sorry to hear about your babies defromity, but you will see how well they learn to cope.
I have just adopted an elderly yellow female, with no beak! She was attacked in an aviary and the owner no longer wanted the responsibility of her, having to teach her to eat etc, so i have now adopted her!

(In addition to my other 6 or so birds ;-) )

All the best, you will find tons of info here!!

wow no beak!!! that must be tough to get her to eat enough food good on you for taking on that responsibility. Though at least you dont have to worry about being chomped!

Ive noticed that my bird gets quite annoyed with his feathers on the deformed wing mainly because they arent sitting flat. Im hoping he/she doesnt do damage to it later on. Hes also quite unbalanced by it the poor thing. But is actually quite loving and friendly. I do have a soft spot for the animals no one else wants.

Hi shame yeah the female i am taking on, she has learnt to eat porridge (hand rearing mix) out of a seed dish, all on her own,, and just needs to be weighed every now and again to check she is maintaining her weight...

And she has to have her veg grated, so she really isnt that much of a problem, although some people find her offensive and an eye sore to look at, I just feel sorry for her, as it is not her fault!

Shame just watch how your bub reacts to the wing and that he doesnt try to strat plucking it.

My females wing is also banadaged at the moment, as it was injured as well, and her tail is mostly missing as well.

maybe if you keep the wings clipped that would help even them out somewhat and Sunny wouldn't feel like she had to be constantly fixing it?

i just bought a lutino female and i was going to name her Sunny too, its a perfect fit for such a beautiful bright yellow bird.
mine is 18mos old and came with the name Betty which she says. i don't care for that name as its not fitting for such a beauty but after searching for names all week , i had picked the name Piper for a couple days, i have come back to Betty.
its her name and the name she has always known so she can keep it. she was named after a cartoon character named Betty Boop.
anyways,
Welcome to the board, there is lots of great info here and nice people.

the feathers on that wing are short and arent formed properly I will try and take a pic of it. So i think the only real way to stop her picking at them is to take the whole wing off. I dont really want to do that just yet as shes unbalanced enough as it is poor thing. but if anyone has any tricks to get her to leave it alone im all ears.

Take the whole wing off? That sounds rather drastic - I've never heard of that.

can be done in extreme circumstances, quite a dangerous procedure. Which is why I really wouldnt do it unless absolutely completely necessary.

Hiya and welcome.

Sunny sound so adorable, lucky to find a home with you.

Aww, SCB SA, your new bird sounds like she has found a wonderful home. It annoys me when people treat animals as a 'throw away' when they are no longer of use. :(
