hello new owner of two IRN's

Post by Gosberry »

Hi everyone (this is going to be a long post :D )

We are new owners to two Lutino IRNs. :D Max & Ruby
We bought them from a pet shop, I know not the best idea but we'd actually been to this pet shop the week before and they werent there so we know they were there for less than week. We were told that one was female, one was male and they were about 3 yrs old but we think they might be just under thou but we're not to sure, and that they were form an aviary ..... so they havent been handled and if they have its not for very long

We've had them for two days and want to give them the best home, we bought a cage that was more than big enough for them both, they were in a tiny thing in the shop it wasnt big enough for their tails not to touch the bottom when they were on the perch  :(

Theyve been allowed out of the cage to fly, The male is very good at it we think the females wings have been clipped on more than one occassion, she is also a biter but only when we've tried to grab hold of her to put her back in the cage, neither of them have bitten our hands when we need to change water and food.

They dont make much noise which wasnt what I was expecting.

At the moment we are just trying to gain their trust sitting by the cage talking to them feeding them their favourites through the side, I am a little unsure about letting them out again because of the fuss the first time but i dont want them to become too accustomed to their cage that they are to scared to come out.

They only play with the toys we've provided if no one is in the room, Theyve been placed in the main room of the house where there is always activity going on.

Ive also read (on the internet  so not to sure if its true) that it will be very hard to bond with them as they have bonded well with each other, is this true or will it just take more time and patience

I think I will finish this now cause i could put loads up here :D
Thanks and just to say what a great site

hi, welcome gosberry...
Its doesn't matter u bought them from petshop,nw u have to be patients n show ur love to them n in the same time u have to gain their trust on u.
When u want to train d birds to be tame, u have to tame 1 birds in 1 time, not both, u have to separate time on them and make sure u dont force them to do anthing(eventhough its hard, but try to give them to do the choices n remember to be patients). Have a good time with ur birds...
*if anything wrong, please correct it friends...

Hi all, I'm gosberry's fiance. We're really excited to be the new owners of these fantastic birds and we've had some successes in two days alone.

Yesterday when we let them out for some exercise Max (the male) took food from my hand.....ruby also did the same but from inside the cage..they didnt want to today though so obviously it's going to take time...either that or theyre having an off day.....we can also now put our hands in the cage without so much as a flicker.....as long as theyre as far away from our hands as possible....

The only thing I'd say we're struggling with is putting them back after exercise....ruby almost took my finger off and max prefers all the space of the room so doesnt like going back in.......but on a good note he is flying back to his cage and standing proudly ontop....just not going back in!

Well, thanks for the advice so far cool, it's much appreciated! we're trying to turn the going back into the cage into something positive by offering millet so hopefully that should work!

Sky looks awesome, amazing colours! How have you managed with the training? It's good to hear we're doing everything right...we want to be the best owners we can be!

Well something really good happened tonight. We decided to take the less involved approach....I opened the cage and we just left them to it for an hour...they climbed around ontop and max got really excited and started dancing up and down his perch.....then they chased each other with a monkey nut all on the outside of the cage...they seemed to have great fun...neither of them flew around the room they just stuck close to the cage......then we heard the low grinding click noise which apparently means happy, content and ready for bed.....they climbed back in the cage after having a good look at us, we closed it and half covered it and theyre still clicking as I type! No traumatic chases or half chewed fingers from here on in!

Thanks so much!! Skye wasn't tame when I first got him. He was actually rather flighty. He eventuallly got used to me and my husband. I bought him about 8 months ago. He's a totally different bird. His personality has totally blossamed and his look is completely different now. He now has all these bright green feathers all over his body.

Training is going pretty good. His wings are clipped, but I'm going to let them grow back out and give him a partial clip and teach him flight recall then when he's really good at that, i'm going to let him have a full wing. He doesn't always come when he's called, but he does choose when he wants to come over to me for cuddles. He's used to walking up to me at least.

Sounds good, if we can achieve the same in 8 months we'll be happy!

The wing clipping is something I actually wanted to ask about. Although, like you we dont want them clipped forever we would like to have them clipped for now well we train them....however, yesterday, I found the best avian vet in the country and asked about wing clipping.....I just got laughed at and told that they dont do it......it kinda made me feel guilty for asking and I was spoken to like i was committing a sin! Another non avian vet has said he carries out clipping and general health checks so we might go see if theyre any good...but I'm a bit disappointed as I wanted the best vet to do it!

On the other hand we're slowly coming up with ways to train the birds so if they are effective I'll post the method and outcome on the forum!

Thanks! Some more stuff happened this evening. Max, the male, seemed to relax enough to take food out of my lips, then he was doing it without and I'd give him a seed afterwards.....but Ruby, the female hasnt been so forthcoming, until this evening...my partner got her to take food out of her hand, after that ruby was hooked too, but she kept biting, although we dont think it was on purpose.....trouble is now when I go to give max a kiss ruby runs up and tries....but there's no god damn way Id let her beak go so near to my face....she's badly bitten my partner this evening and it's not like she means too she's just clumbsy and powerfull at the same time....she's fallen in her cage a few times and she sort of half flies into things...she seems in perfect health, just clumbsy but I'm getting both checked out at the vet in the next couple of weeks. I actually think her clumbsiness could be down too having badly clipped wings in the past as she flies slightly sideways and downwards!

she climbs really good though...her poop is fine, feathers fine she makes lots of content noises, nothing around the eyes or beak that would suggest illness.....I just wish she wouldnt bite down so hard!!!!

Thats great :D
I hope everything is ok with Ruby, i wouldn't let her near my face either LOL
I havn't been bitten by an IRN but i have been bitten by a cockatoo!!!
That bloody hurt and bled alot! the cocky was asking for a scratch and i gave it to him, little did i know he was going to turn on me LOL
i still can't believe the great progress you have made, (apart from Ruby bitting your partner, i hope she is ok)
Let us know what the Vet says :D
