Hello Everyone-Question

Post by mlk1825 »

:)Hi everybody,

I am new here. I was looking up videos on Indian Ringnecks and happened to come accross this site and thought it was just wonderful!

I just got my blue Indian Ringneck, Pepé, about two weeks ago. He or she is about 5-6 mos old I was told. He doesn't bite...yet is still a bit wary of hands....always running away at first but still steps up when he is ready.

I have 5 other birds (lovebird, cockatiels, sun conure, and dusky conure) and have always wanted to have a ringneck parrot. When the store I purchase supplies at actually recieved one from their breeder, I was suprised and fell in love with the little guy.

So far, he/she has not been making any noise whatsoever which is why I was looking up videos because I knew that they are supposed to really vocal and learn how to talk. But, Pepé doesn't make a sound. Is that strange?? Especially with my other birds always chatting away and whistling, I thought he would start immediately. He doesn't even scream(compared to the conures, that's pretty suprising).

Other things that he/she has done is learn to excape from the cage, learn how to climb up the shutters, and pulled a few feathers out of my sun conure. Other than that, I don't know what to say. He grooms me a little though and doesn't bite once I get him out of the cage so that is good, right :?:

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks! :)

I got Sky from a pet store and he was quiet and skittish, too. Now he's a total ham and loves snuggling. It will pass. Just be patient and work with him.

What I did for Sky when I first got him was play vids from youtube of Ringnecks vocalizing. He started calling right back. He's still fairly quiet. Your baby will probably get louder as he gets older, too. My baby is about the same age as yours, maybe a month younger. Ringnecks will have a much more pleasant call than the grating scream of conures. I live in an apartment, and haven't gotten any complaints yet.

Don't worry, quiet at first is normal. Give him a few weeks to a month. He'll starting chattering and contact calling (I answer those with a "I'm here") and those cute little "i'm sleepy" chatters.

I will have to warn you about the bluffing stage, though. That doesn't hit until they're about 8 mts old, but seems like your once sweet baby has turned into a monster.

Read more about bluffing at the link above if you haven't already.

Good luck! :)

Thanks for your post. I am glad to hear that it isn't strange and their is nothing wrong with him. I am just not used to having a quiet bird...lol. I hope he does start making noises though. I have played a few videos and my Dusky conure is the one who calls back...hehehe. I will try again when I don't have the others out. :)

I am very scared about the bluffing...I hope it's not too bad. :?

You're welcome! :) He/she will get more talkative as time wears on. IRNs aren't a noisy bird. They do have a slightly loud call, but their not constant noise makers like cockatiels and sun conures. They can be good talkers, too, so be sure to repeat your fav phrases a lot around your new baby. Contrary to popular opinion, females can talk just as well as males.

Bluffing can last a long time or only a week. It's different for different people. Here's a link where you can read more about it.

I love this website! Great info.

:D HELLO & WELCOME, :)

:D Hi! mlk1825 and Pepe, coincidentally my 6 month old green IRN's name is also Pepe. My IRN Pepe and I would like to give you both a warm welcome to this forum. In here you will find a lot of great people and their wonderful IRN FIDS, you will also find answers to any questions that you may have concerning your Pepe. I also bought my Pepe at a Pet Store and like yours he/she was also quiet at firs,t but like after a month or so and with time, love, and patience he/she became vocal, making contact calls, and chattering noises when he/she is going to sleep, and now he/she also gives kisses. So, don't worry your Pepe is still getting accustomed to his new surroundings and you but when he/she gets your trust he/she will be very loving. My Pepe and I hope to see pics of your Pepe soon.
:D :) :D
Thanxs
Attentively,

Karla and my wonderful IRN Pepe
