Moulting tail problems???

Post by Milamber3790 »

Hey guys
sorry i havnt come and said hi in a wile but i've had a hell ova time at skwl. end of year exams at the moment, but i'm almost throu them. :)

Jaws is still moulting, and still a vicious lil $%#&... he get's teritorial about my shhoulder, like it's HIS. same thing with his cage. but if i've got him sitting on my hand then he'll let me pat him and kiss him.
He's getting on well with the dog, neither has eaten the other yet but it'll hapen one day... Toby will just go missing, i'l find clumps of poodle fluff around Jaw's cage.

Jaws is getin adventurous. he likes to flutter to the ground in the morning and climb up on my bed, nible my nose or sumfin. he's ruined two sets of Ipod earphone and badly chewed another, and also my USB adapter for my computer... i just wake up and see him on my bed, chewing on everything... i need to get him a toy...

Anyway way, wat i came to say is that, since Jaws is STILL moulting he's just lost most of his tail feathers. they've all grown bak now but it looks like i've docked his tail. still not fully grown and he's already bent 2 of them. i'm woried about his tail. one of his feathers was just hanging off and bloody, it still had a bit of that cocoon thing around it. also if i look underneeth him, another of his feathers which is falling off too has some black stuff in the centre. like the middle of the feather, where it's hollow is full of blak stuff. i cudnt get a close look cos he goes crazy if he's upside down, and will bite me if i piss him off.
Has anyone had this sorta problem before?

Oh yeh, i forgot to say. i think that maybe he isnt grooming his tail so the feather just died or sumfin. cos isnt he supposed to rub the cocoon thing away? that's what i do with the spikes on his head, cos he can't reach those... but yeh, he's not grooming or cleaning his tail... so i thought that's why the feather was all f%#ked up.

The black stuff in the center of the feather is blood and that is normal. These feathers are called the blood feathers.

After a while, when the feather comes in fully and matures the blood will disappear and it will become clear and empty. If he has broken one and you notice blood, please try and check him carefully, because if it keeps bleeding it can be dangerous even deadly.

If it is still bleeding you will need to paste some corn flower over the break and take your fid to the avian vet to have the feather pulled and healed correctly. If it is just bent then pasting and monitoring could see it heal.

Our cockatiel broke a blood feather, I pasted the feather with corn flower until it created a thick paste and stopped bleeding, then kept her in a quiet and enclosed area for several days until it healed, this seemed to work just fine.

I think in time he will learn to be more careful and care for himself better.

it happens when a young bird doesnt feed correctly the feather of the tail stop growning, died and make necrotic - black.
i think is different with your case, but for sure you can give to your bird vitamins, amino acids and minerals in his drinking water for 5 days. i used to give it to my birds once a week for all year, except breeding and hatching 3 times per week. Are you giving fruits and vegetables to your bird?
a photo of the feather and bird should be very usefull. can you it?

It wasnt bleeding heeps, it was just a few red stains around the base of his tail.
he gets his share of fruit and veg as well as his seeds, a few beans, apple, a bit of orange and carot which he likes tearing apart but barly ever eats any. same with brocoli, he just bites it then spits it over my clean floor. but i've heard that IRNs r sposed to like brocoli...
What kinda food do IRNs eat?

i think you feed your bird good.
irn must feeding with large seeds (sunflower and pinuts),small seed(budgeringar food) with vegetables and fruits.
also a mineral blog and a solution of vitamins, amino acids and minerals in drinking water once a week.
try also millet spray and fresh corn cob, these are very tastefull.
