training kiki

Post by janew »

Hi everyone I got my albino ringneck baby kiki a few days ago and she was not hand tame.We are making great progress and she will now sit on my hand and step up from stick to hand or hand to hand. I also have a lovebird called Hartson who I have had for a month or so,he was in my aviary but the other lovvies bullied him so he came back inside. He enjoys cuddles from me but we have a bit of a problem with Hartson being jelouse of kiki so I take Kiki to my room for training then later Hartson has his out time. I am spending an hour at night with kiki out her cage and I am with her most of the day,I spend time talking to her with my hand in her cage and she sits on my arm but she wont take food from me yet.

The way I got fiona to start stepping up on my arm is when she was on a perch, I would hold my arm as close as possible and kind of nudge her from the back with my other hand. Not hard, just enough to make her want to move away. She still won't go to my fingers though. She's scared of fingers. Baby birds are really clumsy though so I don't know if this would work. Fiona just recently would take treats from my hand. I don't give her anything, but her food in her cage(food wise), not even millet...she gets that when she comes out and is good. You're lucky you can spend so much time with them... they will be tame in no time (hopefully).

i had indie in my computer room and sat at the computer eating with him in his cage and he eventually got curious and came over to see what i had.he ended up getting closer and closer each time then finally got used to us and worked out we were not going to hurt him.

It takes time...and patience. Seppo will come around!

I am not sure how old kiki is but she was removed from her parents about 4 weeks ago due to plucking then looked after for a few weeks inside to make sure she was eating well before she came to me. Have had a brilliant training session this morning, now when she is on the playstand if I put my hand in front of her and say up she justs jumps up a little and lands on my hand, everytime.I then place my hand to stand and ask her down, she is not so keen but is getting there. She too does not like fingers and wont take food from me but I will keep trying with her.She is a really smart girl and I am so pleased at her progress. She is such a mucky bird though and with her being albino she is rather messy looking. She has fruit stains on her feathers, she doesn't like to bathe but I have misted her last few days and she seemed ok with this.Any tips dani on keeping a neat albino.lol.

i dont think its an albino thing, they do get pretty messy especially when they flick fruit around and things like that.Does she put food in her water bowl? she doesnt sound very old so that may be why its so easy to train her.most irns take a while to teach how to step up ect,i think your doing pretty well with her.

thankyou julie, yes she does put food in the water bowl and throw it about.I found out her favorite treat,it is millet spray and I was able to get her to eat from my hand today. She had a little bath too, only put the head and tail in lol.She is unclipped but doing very well,I even managed to get her to sit on the floor with me for a few minutes. She is ok with my partner and daughter but when they talk to her she looks for me for reassurance so I also think she is young.
