help with IRN and GCC

Post by lilbare »

I just got a GCC and my IRN is doing everything to go after him. If he is out of his cage he tries to get the GCC off the playstand and will even go in the GCC cage and not come out and when I try to get him he bites me which is not normal. so I have to keep him in his cage :( I do not have another room to keep the GCC or IRN in so any tips to get him to stop. I do not mind he if never likes him just not go after him all the time?

Here are a few suggestions:
have more play stands so the greenie isn't using the irns playstand and to give them more personal space.
Don't let them out together, even remove the gcc from the room so your irn can come out and play. like set up some foraging in you gccs cage to entertain him and move his cage to the bathroom while the irn is out.
If your irn doesn't want to step up, you need to give him more reason to step up. Start your basic training again and use a better treat as the reinforcer. Do this without having the gcc in the same room, so your irn is more likely to be focused on you. Be the most attractive option.
I would keep their cages as far away from each other as possible, to allow them to adjust in their own time.
I'd also spend more time with my irn training and ensure that his usual routine is not being disturbed by having another bird around. My (unscientific) thoughts on this is: if irn use to have 3 hours to play with you a day and then gcc arrived and irn doesn't get his 3 hours anymore, not only has irn got another bird in irn territory but he misses out on his usual routine, maybe even while watching gcc taking over irns time out.
Reward your irn while gcc is having time out.
Learn as much as you can about using positive reinforcement to train your birds and read up on counter conditioning.

I can attest to this

I recently got a second IRN.. he's quite young and needs to be worked with... when i'm working with him my original bird gets jealous (wanting to play too) and he comes over to treat territory, basically interrupting. So I give him a big fat almond and he flies away and is happy for several minutes, during which time I'm able to focus on the young bird.. Now both birds are happy.

When one has a treat and the other doesn't, there are issues. So I'm guessing your own bird issue right now comes down to jealousy.
You need to keep your irn too distracted to concern himself with the other bird.

I would suggest getting the IRN fully engaged in an activity.. then let the other bird out while not ever removing your full attention from the IRN.. keep playing with him, keep him interested. The new bird being out should just be a background event that doesn't factor in to anything else as far as the original bird is concerned.

I have them far away from each other. But I do not have a spot that I can move the other bird (small Apartment) He gets the same attention as before and if I let him out and not the other then he goes and tries to get his cage. I am working on it but not it is going slowly Thank you.
