How do you get a baby onto more solid foods and when?

Post by LINDY »

Hi There, I would like some info if you please, we have just bought a baby ringneck, he/she was apparently 6 weeks old so he/she would be just over 7 weeks now. THe little one ate fine when we used the seringe and then ate well for a while from his/her little spoon but now he/she seems to not want to eat so much anymore, it does look like there has been any weight loss yet but it is a little bit of a concern that the little one is not eating so much any more? Also how do we know when to change the food from phase one to two and how do you know they ready for seeds and so on and do they know by themselves how to break open the shell of the seed?

I think you posted in the wrong section of the forums. Try reading the IRN Diet and Housing section you might see that some of the previous posts have answered some of your questions.

at 7 weeks you should be feeding once or twice a day maybe even three times depending on what your bird is eating during the day and how much of it is eaten. You should offer your bird soaked seeds and pellets to help him or her get used to the idea of eating solid foods.

Around this time the birds do eat less as they are getting ready to attempt to fly, he should eat if he's hungry.

Sit with your bird and show him how to eat, show him what to eat by eating it too, or at least pretending. Squish open peas and give him the insides to try, break open sunflower seeds and offer those. Once he is eating the soaked seeds you can try introducing normal seeds as well, this may take a few weeks to accomplish so dont try and rush your bird into doing something he isnt ready to.
