Is this ok???
I have got 2 IRN that are about 6 months old. I feed them fruit and veg daily, seeds for 5 days of the week and pellets for the other 2 days. The pacagead person in pet shop said that they are nector pellets, is this ok for the birds? Also is there any fruits and veg that we can not give our birds? And how much food is too much food?
Food
Hi,
My avian vet said my IRNs can eat anything I eat except for the following: avocado, alcohol, salt, caffeine and chocolate. He said that under no circumstances should I give them any of these things.
I have had my birds for 12 months now and I learned that just because someone says IRNs like particular foods, doesn't mean that mine will eat them. They love apples, grapes, corn, peas, peanuts, pomegranates, figs, rice and pasta but hate pears, bananas, capsicum, orange, pumpkin, sweet potato, strawberries and a whole range of other things I have tried. They will eat spinach because I make them and cherries and melon if they are in the mood. Carrots are ok to play with but don't expect anyone with feathers in my household to eat one.
They climb up on their bowl that hangs about half way up their cage and toss out the things they don't want or don't like.
They also LOVE dried cranberries and dried pawpaw. My local pet shop sells kebabs of dried fruit (melons, blueberries, pawpaw, etc.) and they love these. They seem to like the blueberries the least because the blue bits are the last to be eaten.
My birds seem to eat more if they are feeling bored so I always make sure they have lots to do (and lots to chew!). They will happily shred things all day. I put a leafy tree branch in their cage and they spend ages ripping it to bits.
