How are Ringnecks sexed at a young age?

I have a female Lutino which I was convinced was a male - but she grew up and I eventually admitted to myself that HE was a SHE!

I have had a beautiful outdoor aviary built for her and I would love her to have a partner one day but Im not willing to buy another baby not knowing what sex it is. How do they sex these birds and is it an easy and cheap thing to have done??? If I am to get another one I would want to handrear it like I did with my female.

Any ideas???

Hi,
I would say to get he/she DNA sexed. Its not to pricey.
there are other ways/myths that people use which is not 100% right
.the pelvic bone-if its wide appart its a male, close to gether, its a female. but this is not 100% right.

One of my male birds developed his ring at 3 years of age.

Another way some birds can be sexed at such an early age is through 'nest sexing' where if the full mutations and splits of the parents are known, the colour of the chicks can determine the sex.
For example, I have a grey/ino male and a blue cinnamon hen, ALL ino chicks will be female. Any blues and greys I get can be either sex.

DNA or surgical sexing are other options.

Thanks I found a local vet who can do it apparently, they sex all the birds at our local pet store and they say it is quite cheap to do All the birds for sale that are sexed are already adults and are not hand reared and I like my birds to be part of the family too!
