Escape ringneck will live or die?

Hi,

A female parrot has escape from the cage last week leaving chicks and a male bird behind.
Is there a chance she will return she back to the cage looking for her chicks or she will dies in Australian bush. Any idea?

I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

I'm sure if she could find her way back she would come back to her chicks... but I'm sorry to say, I don't think the odds are good. Keep your eyes peeled though, to see if she comes back. You should also try putting up signs. Barbara Heidenreich has some suggestions here:

When I was a teenager, I had a male peachface fly out of the aviary as I walked in one day. He had chicks... I managed to lure him back with some millet (his favourite) and got him back in a cage... but I have to say he didn't fly too far away... because he got out when I was there, I knew where he was at all times... after that incident my father built a second door onto the aviary so that if they got out, they only made it into another caged area.

Keep an eye on the babies and see how the father is going with them. You may need to handraise them if he can't cope.

Yes if you are in Aus it will have a good chance to survive as long as its not hand tame,

They love Australia they are that good at surviving here they are pests in WA!

If she is hand tame then i dont like the odds,

Hope she comes back.

I didn't know there were IRNs surviving in the wild in Australia.

Have you seen any sign or heard her around?
If she is a green, she may have a good chance of survival from predators as she would be able to camouflage in the bush. A bright yellow would have a more difficult time.

Hope she comes back for you.

I understand that sometimes IRNs may accidentally get away... but the fact sheet says that some people purposely let them go in the bush. How irresponsible!

id have to say it would depend on where you are.

being an aviary bird might give it a better chance, however, it will still have a largely reduced skills at foraging and finding food, and defence against native birds - we have some particularly dominant and aggressive ones around here.

im sorry for your loss and i hope by chance she does stick close by.
