Taming 2 Birds

Post by alan80 »

Are there any tricks when you are trying to tame/train a parrot when you own more than one? Do you work with each bird separately or do you work with them together?

Hi Alan

I work with my birds separately while the others watch... They learn so much from watching.
Cheers

Yep I am with Lene,

When they are together they are way too distracted with each other, either playing or fighting .. or .. playfighting ..

I dont know about others, but in my home, I have to work with all of my birds out of sight of the others. If not, they all pawn for my attention and we get nothing done.

I always work one on one with each of my babies except for shower time. They all come in with me for speech and steam every morning.

Through the rest of the day they hang out together on a wooden stand we built. So, I keep them together most always unless working with them on something.

*I* allow my ringneck, CAG and cockatiel to hang out together all of the time. I also cage them together except for the CAG, which has his own cage. I say this because I DO NOT reccommend to others to house a cockatiel with a ringneck.

In fact, I dont recommend housing two ringnecks together, for several reasons (bonding to eachother and not to you and/or death or injury).

I just happen to have a couple that are in true love and would die if seperated (a tiel and a ringneck).

They have pretty much been together and are about the same age from the beginning. Perhaps thats why they are so co-dependent.

Everyone here knows Baby would NEVER hurt Peaches... but they would also most likely tell anyone else NOT to house the two together, as would I.

Hope I was of some help. The dynamics of my flock has changed since I got the CAG. He isnt 'seperated' from Baby and Peaches he just lives differently. For example, he isnt as agile and spastic as Baby so I sit him on his own stand so Baby wont aggravate him.

Its almost like I have Baby and Peaches... then my CAG. It works together well but having a CAG is just a whole new ball game.

A bird isnt a bird, isnt a bird. The big and heavy ones just like to chill and look pretty. Baby and Peaches are OFF DA HOOK! Not as dignified. lol

They sure can! That can sometimes be bad too. Jibby never chewed ceilings/walls/blinds and general 'fixed' household things apart from the occasional tiny hole in the flyscreens. But.. Yoda came along demolishing everything and now Jibs copies what Yoda does. I've even secretly watched them and Yoda 'eggs' Jibby on by 'showing' him how to demolish things then sits back and watches. They take turns. Argh! They know when theyre in trouble though!

On the other hand, Yoda has also watched me handle Jibby and is learning to trust people and be a more obedient birdie because he can see that Jibby gets love and attention when hes a good boy. They love to copy each other thinking, 'I can do that too!'.

If I'm handling one, the other gets jealous and wants me too. If I take Yoda to another room. Jibby will follow. They hate being separated! My rule is to handle them equally so one doesn't miss out.

Gosh, I don't know what I'd do with more birdies! I guess, I'll have to deal with that when the time comes.
