Bushfires
I have just been watching the coverage of the fires on television. I, too, hope everyone is OK. Devastating. 66 identified as having been killed so far. Numbers expected to rise. I was sitting at home thinking about how I could ensure that my birds and my dog would get out if my home was threatened ...

Talking
I love having a conversation with Bird. He will talk to ages. He also likes to chat when I am working on my laptop or cooking in the kitchen. He also has chats with my golden retriever and calls out to him. Every time the dog does something wrong, Bird says "uh oh". It is hilarious. He cal...

Chatter
Hi,
My guys do it when they are happy and snoozing. If I talk to them, they answer so I figure they can't be asleep. Just having a bit of a doze.

Names
I now have four IRNs. Their names are Bird, Flossie, Breeze and Summer. I think it is really hard to name pets. People complained when I gave Bird his name but it really suits him. He knows his name and responds to it as does Flossie. The other two are still little and new to my home so they are sti...

Grinding noise
Hi,
My guys make a grinding noise with their beaks when they are sleepy and happy. I now quite like the sound because it indicates they are feeling quite settled. My guys also like to spend time with their feet. They even hold them up in front of their faces and have a bit of a chat with them.

Toe love
Hi, One of my birds likes to "court" my toes. He has a chat with them, bobs and weaves, runs away then comes back. It keeps him happy. I recently got a new, young bird and one of my other birds regurgitated and fed the baby. It was quite cute. I have since got another young bird but the or...

Hi, My avian vet said my IRNs can eat anything I eat except for the following: avocado, alcohol, salt, caffeine and chocolate. He said that under no circumstances should I give them any of these things. I have had my birds for 12 months now and I learned that just because someone says IRNs like part...

Australia
Hi, I'm also Australian. I live in Tasmania in a little town called Flowerpot south of Hobart, the capital city. My home is a waterfront property overlooking Bruny Island. I watch the dolphins swimming up and down the channel between my home and Bruny Island and the occasional humpback whale. I thin...

Battle of wills
Hi, My two lutinos have recently started to fly after their wing feathers grew back in. I was going to have them clipped but my avian vet asked me to give them a go flying. In general they are doing well but it has now become a battle of wills when it is time to put them back in their cage. I used t...

Becoming an IRN owner
Hi, I LOVE my IRNs. I have three. I have two beautiful lutinos. They have been with me for a year. I also recently got a turquoise. They are the happiest, funniest and thoroughly lovable little creatures. I laugh all the time at the things they do. They are not difficult to look after and seem to be...

affectionate birds
My birds can be quite affectionate. They will climb all over me, preen my face, give me parrot kisses, hide under my ponytail if upset about something, and press their beaks against my eyelids if my eyes are closed but they HATE being scratched or patted. Whenever I have tried, they either looked sh...

Wandering birds
My birds are always supervised when they are out of their cage. I have a dog, too, but I don't trust him not to get too friendly with my birds as he is only 10 months old. I have tried to keep my IRNs contained in an area in the room with no luck. When I am using my laptop, they like to walk over th...

Hi, I just wanted to let you know that Bird and Floss have a new little brother (or sister). He is about 3 months old and is blue (Bird and Floss are lutinos). I put a smaller cage next to their big cage for a couple of days so they could get used to each other and they have been out of their cages ...

rope toys
Hi, My vet said OK as long as you check them daily and trim off any bits they might get caught around their feet or in their throats. My birds would prefer toys made out of leather or raffia (I don't know what else it is called). They love to shred the raffia. My birds have a rope perch they love bu...

Hi, My birds LOVE grapes. They would rather have grapes than anything else except maybe pomegranates. They also love peas in their shell, apple, corn, peanuts in their shell, puffed corn (or unsalted, unflavoured popcorn), dried cranberries, dried figs, and kiwifruit (chinese gooseberries). They are...

Play areas
Hi, My birds won't stay on their play gym. They like to climb up and hang upside down for a while but would prefer to be wandering around the room. No matter how attractive I make it, they still find better things to do. They can fly now but even when their wings were clipped they would just glide d...

Hi, My two birds (Bird and Floss) have just started flying after their clipped feathers grew back but they still like to flap their wings madly when they are in their cage. They also like to hang upside down. I have read that wing flapping is a sign of a happy bird when caged budgerigars do it so I ...

Talking birds
Hi, I have one bird (named Bird!) who talks all the time and another (Floss) who has only said hello once. They are 13 months old now. Bird has been talking since he (I like to think he is a he) was about 7 or 8 months old but before that he practised for a long time. He would make a funny little hu...

Ear biting
Hi, One of my birds likes to snack on my ear. She doesn't do it very much any more. I started covering my ear with my hand whenever she did it and she got bored. Now whenever she goes to do it and I start to raise my hand she just stops. Of course, now I have to stop her doing a hit and run bite of ...

Cage bar spacing
Hi, When I first got my birds I had a cage with a wider bar spacing and had to swap it. They would go up into the top corner and squeeze their heads through to get a bird's eye view of what was going on. Unfortunately, they found it very difficult to get their heads back through and I was terrified ...

Hi, I bought a cat scratching post with lots of levels and rope covered poles. I got it at the local pet shop in Tasmania where I live. I bought this because there weren't any bird play gyms around. My two birds love it and will happily climb all over it and hang upside down from the various levels....

Hi, My two birds have quite a big cage and they live in the living area of the house. My guys get around their cage and play with whatever is available. They als...

Hi, One of my birds, Floss, is more inclined to bite than the other, Bird (I think Floss is a girl and Bird is a boy but I will have to wait and see because they are too young yet). But I have to say that both my birds can be quite affectionate. If I say "Parrot kisses" Bird presses his be...

Requiring advice about flying!
Hi everyone. I hope someone can give me some advice. When I got my 2 ringnecks they were 3 months old and had their wings clipped. They have now grown their primary wing feathers back and are starting to fly (without much grace and finess yet!). They turned one year old mid October. My avian vet wan...

Hello, I live in Tasmania and have two beautiful lutino IRNs. I have had them less than a year and they are just learning to talk. Although there is a very good avian vet practicing near my home, I am glad I can ask for advice from people with experience with parrots like mine. My parrots say hello ...
