peanuts?

hi,

my fid has an addiction to peanuts. does anyone know if they are good/bad for her? i don't give her heaps, but if i put them at the bottom of her feed bowl, she picks all the other food out to get to them, then goes about eating her food off the floor. funny little things aren't they?!

my two Guys/Girls has everyday a mix with seed, nuts and peanuts. like my moms lovebirds and amazon so i think its not bad for them (take care about the peanuts does not has salt)

peanuts are ok but are rich in fat so you must give only few of them in a day.
Also be careful because it is very common the present of aflatoxins and aspergilus sp. in peanuts and these are very dangerous.
open and check all the peanuts and use only these are fine without any bad spots or signs

Hi Nil,
I am new IRN owner and new to the breed all together; you seem to know alot about the dietary needs - what to feed and what not to feed.. could you possibly give me some advice or tips on what I can feed my 3 month old Asteri to ensure he is happy and healthy and maintaining a balanced diet?

Which nuts are ok to feed? Which fruit and Vegetables are NOT ok? What grains are ok? when can I introduce boiled egg or dairy? Are pellets completely neccesary??
I will really appreciate your help.

for many years i used a seed diet with fruits and vegetables but now i believe that the best is 60% pellets (like harrisons without preservatives and colourings) and 35% seeds, fruits and vegetables. Everyday fresh food
seeds like sunflower, peanuts and millet spray
fruits like apple, pear, peach, cherry, grape and much more
vegetables like brocolli, green-red-hot pepper, cucumber, carots, fresh or frozen corn on the cob, lettuce and much more

This is only a worry with peanuts in the shell. It's the shell that can have the 'mold'.

Since he's digging through just to get the peanuts, I would use them as a treat only food. If he loves them so much and gets them straight from you he'll love being around you all the more. I do this with almonds lol.

the peanuts are growning in the ground so their shells curry a lot of bad microorganisms, like molds, coliforms, escherichia coli, bacilus cereus, listeria monocytogenes and many more, but it needs many of them to cause a problem to the bird.
if the bird is healthy with a good immune system it is rare to go down
i think the worse may be in the inner, the edible peanut
sometimes molds spoil the peanuts (start from the centre of peanut, growning and finally cover all the peanut ) and then produce aflatoxins and other dangerous toxins. This may be happen if the peanuts (and the other seeds) storage in warm and high humidity conditions
These toxins are very dangerous for the health and high carcinogenic
for many years i used peanuts with shell and i havent any problem, maybe i was lucky.
now i use them like treats, 1-2 peanuts per bird and always without the shell and after checking the peanut.

You're right. I was thinking specifically of aspergillus which is present in the shell. Back when I first learned about this mold, it was only said it was present in the shell. Thanks for correcting me and leading me to do research (Google is a wonderful thing!) to find the whole truth.

Ah I did forget to mention that peanuts meant for human consumption are pretty safe from the toxins mentioned. When just one peanut is found with the mold/fungus/etc, the whole batch gets tossed.

The same is not true for peanuts found in animal feeds.

just a funny thing. my Peppy, an IRN loves peanuts to. i give him the whole thing. sometimes he doesnt even eat the peanuts. he has a blast just getting them out! he also will put the shell in his water dish and let it soak for a little while then he eats it. i dont know if its a usual thing for them or not. i am new to all this, but i think its kind of silly.

I buy people peanuts in the shell (not the ones bagged for pets) and I only give as a treat or something to occupy him if I need a 2 minute babysitter!

I buy packs of granulated peanuts (no salt) and use them for training. They serve as rewards for performing a trick. They work really well and they are so small so I don't need to chop them up finer for training purposes.

Mine also love almonds. I hide these in a specific location in their cage to encourage them to "go to bed" on cue.
