my irn is is around 18 months old and has still not said a word, do you think he ever will??

some birds never do learn to talk or imitate a single thing. Some are specialists in sound-effects. Some only talk a little bit. Some do it all. It's all just up to the bird. Don't stop trying though! Constant repetition.
A couple ideas that may help:
You could tape record yourself talking and play it set on repeat in his room where his cage is while you're not there to teach him.
One thing I do is say the name of every thing I hand Skye. I say 'here's some apple' while giving him apple.
