In my experience, best time to pull chicks for pet purposes is at 3 weeks. Your need for a brooder depends on the temperature inside your house. During breeding season, our indoor temperature is about 60 deg F so I don't use a brooder. I help the birds keep warm at night and during colder days by installing a cheap electric heating pad inside their container box. Worked for me over the years.
