Poppy Seeds?

Post by Patrick »

Are poppy seeds safe for birds? I've seen poppies listed as a poisonous plant and yet the seeds are included as ingredients in several birdie bread recipes and in wild birdseed mixes. Edible poppy seeds come from the plant papaver somniferum, commonly known as the opium or breadseed poppy, and do contain minute trace amounts of opioids. While the quantity of seeds necessary to produce intoxication in humans is prohibitively extreme, I'm wondering if even small quantities of seed would be unsafe for birds. Anyone know?
