My Inidan Ringneck has gone Savage

Post by LucasG »

I bought my blue Indian Ringneck when it was 8 weeks old. When I first bought him/her I was still feeding the bird formula and it was the most smart and intelligent bird. It was kind and it was playful, it swung upsidown on its perches and let me hold it all the time. I socialised it lots and took it to my friends house so it could socialise with his cockatiel. By this time my bids wings were clipped. I had taken him/her to a pet shop and they clipped his wings.

After a few weeks one morning I noticed that my bird was bleeding from a hole in its chest and its bottom area. All of its tail feathers were also gone. I was very worried that it had punctured its body on something and took it to a bird vet immediately. They said that the petshop had clipped my birds wings wrong and had not allowed it to have a glide. It had injured its chest and had split its bottom area and needed surgery immediately, so I went ahead with it. After the surgery I did not get back the same playful bird I brought in. My bird didn't want me holding it and kept trying to bite me. I obviously figured he was just in trauma from the surgery so I followed the vets instructions and still sat by his cage.

It has probably been around 6 months since the surgery now. I have been socialising my bird daily, even using gloves to get it used to my hand again. It has lost nearly all its tameness now in all my efforts to make him like how he used to be. The bird eats seed from my fingers but that's about it. It won't look at me, it doesn't want me to hold it and is not the pet I once had.

The birds wounds now have fully healed and his tail is just starting to grow back now. Does anyone know why he has turned this way and how o can get ho, back to normal. I haven't neglected him and have socialised him daily, but nothing is working. Hopefully someone knows the answer.

Your bird sounds deeply traumatised, the medical treatment was unpleasant handling, and he probably associates handling with pain and discomfort. I'm afraid it has set your bird back, he no longer trusts human hands.
I am glad I have never clipped my birds wings, because flight is a birds safety net, they need to be able to escape danger/threats, which yours couldn't.
So, back to square one, with having to learn trust again, he may never regain trust, all you can do now, is start from the beginning, and wait it out.
