Hello I am new to breeding IRNs

I am trying to pair up a olive gold cock to a skyblue hen when she goes near him he just pecks her away it has been 5 or 6 weeks since he introduced to her how long do they take to pair up?

he seems more intetrested in the green cock ???

also what combinations might i get from them?

Hello and welcome to the board have you got just the pair in the cage together? If not is there some way that you can move the green cock away from the hen?

How old are the birds? Are you sure of their genders?

If per other common names;

Golden Olive = GreyGreen Cinnamon
Skyblue = Blue Cinnamon

And assuming no other splits...

GreyGreen Cinnamon cock x Blue Cinnamon hen
=50% GreyGreen Cinnamon/Blue cocks and hens
=50% Green Cinnamon/Blue cocks and hens


But a lot of GreyGreens are split to Blue... so assuming it is indeed;

GreyGreen Cinnamon/Blue cock x Blue Cinnamon hen
=25% Blue Cinnamon (Skyblue) cocks and hens
=25% Grey Cinnamon (Silver) cocks and hens
=25% GreyGreen Cinnamon (Golden Olive) cocks and hens
=25% Green Cinnamon (Isabel) cocks and hens

One other question, though. What part of the world are you in? It's getting to be the later part of the breeding season for IRNs in the southern hemisphere and if you're in the northern hemisphere you're 3-4 months away from any breeding activity.

The olive cock is 4-5 years and cin/blue hen 2 i now she is hen because she layed eggs but didnt have mate the grey was a hen too and nearly killed each other so swiched grey for olive.

in the avairy is a green and lutino pair and a spare lutino that is also in love with the green cock and now has eggs also the olive and cin/blue i want to get another avairy to put olive and hen in but hubby is not up for it i am worried the olive wont accept the blue because he was in with greens and grey/green at breeders.

Our breeding season october onwards but mine started in september must be the unusual warmer weather.

Maybe the Golden Olive male is not quite ready to breed or he is simply too distracted with other birds.

If I was in your situation, I would separate him and his prospective mate from the other birds... in a cage where he cannot see or perhaps even hear the bird/s he is distracted with.

If in a few weeks he still won't attempt to breed, then perhaps you're better off trading him with a male that can perform. You don't want to waste the hen's season as well.

I've seen male birds that would rather hang-out with other males I wonder why that is. Perhaps homosexuality is not limited to humanity.

It's actually not unheard of for birds to be...umm...same sex pair bonded. I have two male budgies who would probably refer to themselves as "fabulous" if they could ever break away from eachother long enough to learn to talk.

IRN's aren't known for forming strong pair bonds, however, and if you can find a way to isolate the olive gold male and the blue female from the other birds there's certainly a chance that he'd forget about the other birds and get with the program.

If facilities are an issue, you might think about visiting your local DIY store and building a smaller breeding cage yourself that you can place in an area away from the main aviary. Maybe you can co-opt that bird hating husband into the project with something like "Dear, I love it when you work with tools..."
