Bad Habit?

Post by nichole123 »

Master Chief always chews on his toe nails. I cut them as often as they need to be cut and I cut them as short as I can without clipping the quick or taking away his ability to hang on to suff. Is this just a bad habit or is there a reason? Do any of your birds do this?

Do an exam on his feet to make sure he does not have pressure sores from perches such as cement or sand perches. If they look healthy then a vet check is in order to see if maybe he has mites. Birds are on their feet all of the time and it's not natural for them to chew their feet unless there is a problem.

They naturally clean their nails. But do check for anything causing them discomfort.

Always to me is that he does it every day. It's not constant but it's everyday. I took Donna's advice and checked out his feet even though I don't use cement or sand perches and I took him to the vet at my work for her to check for mites (we were due for a checkup anyways). He is all clear... I guess he just likes to play with his toes!
