wierd drunken and agressive behaviour...

Post by Milamber3790 »

hi guys...
i havnt got round to posting this earlier...
Jaws has been acting a bit strangly in the past few weeks...
well i firstly noticed that he's been starting acting strangly in his cage... he'll sit on his top perch and spread his wings slightly, his eyes will go pinlike and he'll do these drunken swaying steps along the perch... it reminds me of the wierd ringneck behaviour you see on youtube.
ok that started a few weeks ago... now he goes spastic everytime i go near his cage... i acumulate at lest 6 or 7 bites per week and my fingers end up looking like they have gone through a meat mincer.
when he's away from his cage he'll act normaly, sit on my shoulder, let me pat him and all.
is this hormones or something? is there a specific mating season every year or does it just happen when there is a female around. someone said on another post that their breading pairs are wild and are a bit agresive...

but then again i herd of this bird thingo were a guy was filming his cokatoo. the guy put one of those mirror screens in the room to get propper light and all that profesional sht.
the cokatoo started going crazy and in the end they figured out it was cos the mirror hid the doorway and the bird couldn't see them when they came into the room...
has anyone had wierd problems like this with their ringnecks and if so, what would you propose as a solution?

Sounds like Jaws is doing a little male mating dance! Yoda does this too to some toys and ropes. It does look a little strange!

Yes, this could be hormones. Mating season depends on where you live and its usually once a year. Here in Melbourne its around spring. They can get a little nippy around mating season and they don't need a mate to be hormonal! My Jibby gets a bit nippy around his toy bell in mating season and he hasn't had a 'birdy mate' ever!
Its a hormonal rollor coaster sometimes. One day they might bite and nip and growl.. and others they want love and cuddles. Don't encourage mating behaviour though and ignore any biting! I don't think there is anything wrong with them 'dancing' to things though. Sometimes, my Jibs just gets excited (usually if he sees a plane!) and does a little dance. But nothing more. Probebly just excited!

Some parrots have some weird phobias and sometimes freak out if something just is not right. Like they only want the cage in one spot in the room or something like a couch is in the way of their view. Jeez, what we do for our parrots! LOL. Have to re arrange a whole house just to suit them! hehe

I've heard alot of IRNs don't like cages moved around or re arranged! My Jibs is like this. He is usually scared of new things.. like new food, toys etc. And if I re arrange his cage he freaks out. He also gets a fright sometimes in the middle of the night when the fridge suddenly starts humming.

yeh somedays he's alrite and somedays hes in a biting frenzy...
its prity hard to ignore biting tho... seriously it's like geting a finger choped off. he dusnt hold back at all, he puts all his strength into it and he can get prity deep... today he attacked my hand when i got him to step up and once he was on my shoulder he went crazy, he grabbed a piece of my cheek in his beek and tried to rip my face off. it freeked me out, he's never attacked my face before...
well anyways thx for the info... it'l probly pass with time...

PS i havnt moved his cage...

iv also noticed that Jaws has a serious fobia of brooms, garden hoses, strawberries, colorful or strange objecs and a whole lot of other things.
he hid behind my head once cos i was eating an icecream and it looked thretening.
i remember the time when i got him over his fear of strawberries, i had to cut one up and almost mash it to bits. so that he would be sure it was dead...
but when it comes to big dangerous toy poodle puppies, he jumps rite in, gnashing beak and tallons. he isnt afraid of Toby one bit...

I noticed my new blue cock was acting like he was drunk today. I think he was trying to impress skye, at one point I thought he was going to fall of his perch and then he started running his beak across the perch while still looking straight at her and she just tucked her leg up and puffed her feathers up.
When indie gets in his little dancing and bitey moods I ignore him and then my hubby feels sorry for him and then he gets bitten not me.

Jibby runs his tongue along his perch while looking straight ahead and walking like hes walking a tight rope. Usually when hes in a 'happy obedient' type of mood. Not a nippy/biting mood. Is he trying to impress me by doing this? I never really though of that. Is he saying 'Look at me, I'm a good birdy?'

Usually after 5 minutes of acting 'drunk'. Jibby is all fine again. But I can see how it can become an issue. I would ignore it aswell if it becomes a problem.

thx for the info guys.
i was sitting on the daybed on the veranda and he was doing his drunken behaviour just then, i thought bout filming it but its one of those things if you go to film it u lose the moment.
i think he's just a stressed lil bird. he will let me rub the back of his neck, and he'll lay his head against the bars of his cage and close his eyes, crooning like he's in heaven. then he'll jump up and nip me as hard as he can...
i think maybe he's tried to fly and hit the floor a bit too hard. maybe his all brain dammaged or sumfin, or he could be getting at the empty beer botles around the place...

Hehe, yep as soon as the camera comes out they stop whatever they are doing.

Oh darling. Birdies do some funny things sometimes. Especially around that time of the year. They can also be a little nippy.

Dont let Jaws get at that beer what ever you do. Very bad.

Also, don't let Jaws hit the floor hard. I had a tiel once that had its wings clipped incorrectly and it would nose dive into the tiled floor. It broke its breast bone and started plucking around its belly. They can do alot of damage falling. Just be careful of that.
