Thinking about getting a buddy for my Ringneck, and my partner is really set on a Blue Headed Pionus. The Ringneck is 13 months old, and the pionus is still being weaned at 9 weeks. I was told my Ringneck was a male when I bought him, but he definitely does the equivalent of a yoga cobra pose when you scratch his head - beak up, back arched etc.

As he is only 13 months old, he only has a very faint ring developing on his neck which could still pass for the female highlight. He does have a little bit of the black brow.

That being said, the Pinous in question is a female. Does the gender-based female domination cross the families of birds? Should I have any concern over them getting along, if the Ringneck turns out to be female?

I have a hen Alex she has oodles of personality, l weighed her today 272 grams about avaerage, she hated it and bit me nearly taking a finger off. "Look at what you have done!" I cried "Cheer up!" She said, "You have nine more. Hold out another."

When I got Pako, the breeder said it was male. I'm convinced he is a she and I believe I paid more for male. What should I do? I'm not giving him away, but I wanted the black ring, talking etc.

I'm getting a DNA done next week.

13 months is really too early to tell. Dna sexing is a good choice.
My male looked like a hen until his 2 yo moult.
I don't know anything about pionus, I'm not sure we even get them in this country. .. but any birds with different sized beaks can potentially be dangerous, especially if they have had limited socialisation with their own species or other parrots.

I see that breeder posting regularly on sites to sell his birds, do you think it's fair to warn people that he isn't honest (once DNA proves my IRN is female)?

Pako clucks and bends down, with head up like a hen when she sees my cell phone. I have observed no male behaviour. He/she only whistles - no talking.

If l were you l would be careful about defamation of charcter, by all means tell people of your experience but keep it personal.

If the results come back as a hen, I would contact the breeder first and let him know. Dna tests do have a very small margin of error, or it might have even been a simple accident like mixed up samples...
It is funny that he charges more for a male, I've only seen difference in prices for male and female among less common mutations.

Males arent the only ones who talk. My female ringneck talks a bit, not many sentences but she was not hand raised and has another bird for company so the need for human language isn't very high. If I cared enough I could probably teach her to talk more. She is usually easier to understand than our male.

Just a little word of warning, ringnecks and alexs can hybridize. My experience of courting asiactic parrots courting in the house is that they are really annoying! They keep wanting to go in the cupboards to see if they can nest there. My low energy diet and 12+ hours of sleep a night hasn't been effective so far

I actually mentioned it to him today when asking if he had Alex's.
He said "they looked like males" so he didn't even DNA them. I won't ever buy from him again. Very frustrating.

Don't burn that bridge. If your DNA returns female, see him for at least a partial refund.

Agreed. I will await DNA results before saying anything public about it, but I've already mentioned it to him. He said 'too bad' basically. There were capslock letters, etc... He puts no value on client service obviously.
