Pair's first clutch. One fertile egg, hatched baby, now dead

Post by Whinney48 »

This was my pair's first clutch. They finally got it as far as mating and had one viable egg out of five. Mother sat well, dad attentive, baby hatched yesterday, dead today. I don't think they fed it.

Is this a first clutch problem that will resolve itself or should I pull the next clutch of babies after hatching? Or even incubate? Suggestions? Thanks

I have a pair that had their first clutch of two chicks last year. Unfortunately it turned out the female simply stopped feeding them after about 10 days so when I realized there was a problem it was too late to save the chicks. They're sitting on another clutch right now and I'm just waiting for the chirping of chicks before pulling them out to handrear. Sadly I didn't have the suitable formula for handrearing last year but I made sure I have some this year...just in case.
