New IRN owner here

Post by pippens84 »

Hi everyone. I am a first time owner of an IRN. I have been wanting one for 2 years and finally had the chance to get the blue one I really wanted. So I have a beautiful blue IRN who I have named Shelby. Unsure of his gender at this stage but hoping to get him DNA confirmed. I got him at 4 weeks old and he is now 5 and a half weeks. He is starting to play and loves to be cuddled. I have been getting him well socialised as I want him to be used to everything as I also have to loud children. According to a chart I found he should be starting to go to 5 hourly feeds during the day but I find he still needs his 4 hourly feeds so have carried on with that. He has no interest in trying anything other than his formula at this stage. So I am just going with what he is showing me he wants. I absolutely adore him and love having him. It has been so interesting watching his feathers come in as he was a bit bald to start with. lol. I was wondering what do I start to introduce to him first. He adores his warm blankets and I wash them every day (he has 4) and the closer he is to me the happier he is. lol. I am also from New Zealand. Look forward to talking IRN with everyone. :)

Well this morning is the first time Shelby has only eagn half the amount he normally would. He just stook off back tonhis cage and refused to look at the spoon. Does that mean hes ready to be introduced to other things? Whats the best think to offer first?

Pippens84, everyone suggests apples or corn first. However, with Sunni, I introduced a little warm softened carrots and some leafy greens. Sure, they are going to love the apples and corn and everything else sweet. But, and this is just my opinion, I would start with veggies that don't have so much sugar in them. I was afraid that with Sunni I would be creating eating habits where she would only eat sweet foods, and she doesn't need the added sugar. There is enough sugar that happens naturally in foods, why add to it? Mostly veggies, but fruits in moderation.
