What colour?

Post by sammyg83 »

Hi all.

Have lingered around for a while reading everyones stories and checking out photos, so thought I would sign up and start learning a little bit more.

I have attached 2 images. The green is our girl Buddha. She is 2 and came from a blue cock and lutino hen. Have been told she is cobalt green split to blue?? Does this sound right?

We are considering pairing her with the attached photo of Mr Blue. His parentage is unknown. Would he be considered straight blue?

Would he pair well with Buddha?? What colours would we likely get?

Cheers, Sam

Hi Sam,

To answer your question - a blue male and lutino female cannot produce a cobalt green - unless you were given the wrong info and the dad was actually a cobalt (Dark Blue) himself? But based on the info on parents given, they could only have produced green split blue and Ino cocks, and green split blue hens.

That would make your hen Green split to Blue (Green/blue)

Not having any further genetics on your blue male, the possible outcomes for your pair are as follows:

1.0 blue (cock) x 0.1 green /blue (hen)
% from all 1.0
50.0% 1.0 blue
50.0% 1.0 green /blue
% from all 0.1
50.0% 0.1 blue
50.0% 0.1 green /blue

If indeed, it turns out your hens dad WAS Cobalt and not a normal blue, and she is carrying the cobalt (Dark) gene, then this is the outcome:

1.0 blue(cock) x 0.1 D green /blue(T1)(hen)
% from all 1.0
7.0% 1.0 D blue
43.0% 1.0 D green /blue(T1)
43.0% 1.0 blue
7.0% 1.0 green /blue
% from all 0.1
7.0% 0.1 D blue
43.0% 0.1 D green /blue(T1)
43.0% 0.1 blue
7.0% 0.1 green /blue

ie, you'd get Blues, Dark Blues(cobalt), Greens and Dark Greens, all green birds split to blue.

Hope that helps somewhat :)
Regards Deb
