I spent today looking at a few bird places...
The attitudes of everyone i came across was terrible!!
They ALL said to me "ooh no we dont hand raise ringnecks, they arnt worth it"
"They dont make good tame birds"
"We only have averiy birds, you cant handle them"
How annoying is that!!
It bothers me that people think that of specific breeds, types of animals arnt any good for certain things.
Its not the breed its the time and love you put into them!!
The horse industry is like this, i didnt know that the bird industry was the same!!!
Anyway thats my whinge for the day, Im off to ebay to look at play pens/cages

Grrr...I know! I will have to actually argue with them and tell them about my Prinny. They still won't believe me...if they want to miss out on a great bird it's their fault. We are lucky to have discovered them.

After making the decsion to get Bhanu and before picking her up I nearly changed my mind about getting a ringneck. This site actually convinced me otherwise. Added to the fact that she only has the one foot and I thought 'what am I doing'. I'm so glad that I went with gut instict or I would have missed out on the most delightful bird. People tend to draw on the experience of one animal/bird and label them all the same. I know what you mean about the horse industry here. mind you I have had more damage done to me by one horse then any parrot I have ever owned.

I realized that there are a lot of places here that don't breed ringnecks, but i found a bird specific pet store which is wonderful, and i was talking to the owner there who said she doesn't breed them, but would find one for me when i'm ready for another!

well... there are very few places that sell hand raised ringnecks. They are becoming a little more popular now than before.
a) Breeders wont hand raise them cos they are too much time and effort unless there is a chance that they are a more expensive bird. ie: a pastelblue and a blue bird mate and have babies, the babies are hand raised to increase the survival rate for the breeder but the breeder is expecting at least SOME pastelblue birds in there. Any blue birds get sold of cos the breeder doesnt want plain birds.
b) They arent very friendly unless they ARE hand raised. And very few people can be bothered hand raising them, especially if they are going to be sold to pet shops that dont pay much for them.
What I did was go straight to a breeder, asked for an unweaned baby about 4 weeks old and finished of hand raising them. Pfft I even thought of hand raising them as pets to sell. But /sigh I could never sell my babies.
