Our custom flight cage!

Post by Redzone »

Hi guys, here are a couple of pics of our custom cage/mansion we built for Nele, from an old TV cabinet :)

We lined it with Tasmanian Rosewood due to it being made from pine, when Claire got the cabinet from the local bloomhill op shop warehouse she thought it was cedar, but it was only the doors that were proper wood (silky oak). Came out tops i think, and Nele loves it (but not as much as being out!)

It's 2 metres long, 1.7m high and about .7m deep :)

Inspired work, great idea of how to house a bird inside without having a large obstructive cage. Do you get much mess around the cage from seed?

We don't feed much seed, except as treats. When he spills food it mostly ends up in between the mesh and the wood, which is fairly easy to wipe and vacuum. We leave the cage cover hanging down the back of the cage during the day to protect the wall from flying veggies and fruit. The cage floor is lino under the newspaper so its easy to wipe up spills.
The whole cage is on wheels, so it's easy to move around for cleaning.
We had intended to roll it outside on nice days, but it is really awkward so we generally use his travel cage outside instead.

Here's a few more under construction shots of me installing the last couple of internal trims. As you can see Nila doesn't have a cage territoriality problem!
