How do I input turquoise grey into the genetic calculator?

Post by nalukaikamahine »

Please forgive me for my ignorance....but I am a dummy when it comes to genetics...

I've read the calculator basics and I still end up with a cloudy brain and my eyes crossed...the last time I even thought about genetics was over 10 years ago.

I have a turquoise grey [hen, maybe? We don't know yet]

I'd like to see what the outcome would be with a turquoise grey hen or cock with a blue [or turquoise] hen or cock.

I just can't figure out how to input turquoise grey....is this color a blue base or a green base? Ugh. lol.

Anyone?

Thanks.

Or even what you think the best color pairing for a turquoise grey would be; to get the best colors out of it.

Tick 'visual' Turquoise and Grey, as well as 'splits to' Blue :)

The Turquoise mutation is only visible on Blue/based...Green/base can only be split for it (recessive in Green), NEVER for Blue/base as it is a dominant mutation in Blue.

So, your bird is Grey (blue based) with Turquoise :)

no worries

it gets easier as you go- Turquoise once you know, becomes simple-

Turquoise is an allele of Blue
Blue can never be split to Turquoise
Green can only be split to Turquoise
There are df (doublefactor) Turquoise, and sf (singlefactored) Turquoiseblues

Ok, so here's another dumb question. I thought that the turquoise in turquoise grey, was actually green? Because even though it's referred to as turquoise grey, it's not actually turquoise...right?

Ugh, see...now I'm confusing myself! lol

nope, all birds that are visually Turquoise are all genetically Blue/based birds

Turquoise is one of the parblue mutations - parblue meaning 'partial blue'

Try to think away from the actual dictionary definition of the colour 'turquoise' because as you know your chick is not a 'turquoise' colour

Simply put... the Turquoise mutation in Indian Ringnecks shows only on blue or bluebased birds - the mutation allows for the wildtype (green) colour to be expressed. - so in your case the feathers are a Greygreen colour (because your bird is Grey)- in a normal Blue bird the feathers would be Green- and so forth and so forth :)

I like to think of the Turq mutation as a mirror into the green series- ie what your bird's colour would have looked like if it were green based bird
