videos of tame IRNs positively interacting with people

Post by ellieelectrons »

Hi All

I've got this idea for trying to get my birds less scared of new people and new locations. I was thinking about showing them videos of IRNs interacting with people in a positive way. After a quick search, though, I couldn't find many - in fact I found one: http://youtu.be/k3tJ0-n3710

This would be one part of the strategy any way - I have no idea if it will work.

I was just wondering if any of you can share links to videos of IRNs interacting positively with people? I'd prefer not to have footage of birds on shoulders if possible (just because I try to discourage my guys to shoulder surf).

Hey Ellie
I have videos of me with my birdy on my chest/shoulder but I dont want to put them up because Im in them and he is near my face so probably not what you want haha... we socialised our bird a lot, taking him to other peoples houses, inviting people over so he got used to them. So he will step up on pretty much anyones finger as long as he isnt on his cage lol but I will let you know if I find any vids of OTHER people lol :)

PS I just watched your video of Janey and Charlie flying to you so cute, hopefully mine will do that some day hes not too good at flying just yet.

PPS i found this video but its just of us having a cuddle with not really much sound...

Thanks for the video Fi. I'll add it to my list! I'll spend some time over the weekend trying to find more! I'm also hoping I'll be able to find some of them interacting with men too!

Thanks - that's a compliment coming from you (that's something I admire about you)!... and something I'm definitely not known for! I tend to be a detail thinker.

Thanks, and BTW - I enjoy putting the videos up but they can be misleading. That's a behaviour I'm trying to train in them. It's a bit hit-and-miss - so they don't always get it... and they're not always interested in doing it. I thought about putting up all the times they don't get it right too; but that doesn't make very interesting viewing. Maybe one day I'll put together a bloopers reel.

We don't tend to take them with us when we go out to other people's houses. I'm thinking about getting a better travel cage so that it's a bit easier. Do you let your bird out of the cage at other people's houses? If so, does it bother them? Most of our friends aren't bird people so I don't subject them too much to interacting with our birds... and some of them have cats! We aren't ridiculously social, either, so they don't get that many opportunities for it.

Hey Ellie,

A bloopers real would definitely be interesting watching haha :) also shows how much patience it takes to train birds!

At first we didnt actually take him in a travel cage at all, he just sat on my shoulder in the car, then I hugged him close while we went inside haha but NOW I do take him in a travel cage just from the car to the house because Im too scared that he will fly away now his wings are growing out. They are bird people and have a ringneck as well and just got an eclectus parrot, so we dont take him there often now because of that, we were going there every second weekend but havent for a while because of quarantine and then their eclectus had a major throat infection. But we never put him in a cage just put him on top of their playstand they had, they didnt get along at first (my bird chased theirs around lol) but after two weekends they just chilled with each other on the same playstand. So Im guessing it didnt really bother them as they already had a bird.

I can understand why you wouldnt be taking them to other peoples houses if they have cats, Id be too scared to even take it in a cage with a person that had a cat... My friend has a bird and her parents have a kitten so hope that doesnt turn out bad, Id be so paranoid.

When people come over I always get him out and put him on his playstand (which is situated next to our couch) and get them to sit next to him and talk to him, feed him treats or put their finger out and he hops on etc. He was already a pretty friendly bird when we got him, thats why I chose him as he wouldnt bite when you put your hands near the cage the rest were like snapping turtles!! Also a month after we got him my brother and dad came to stay for a couple of weeks (im originally Victorian lol only moved up here a year ago) and we always had him out and had them play with him as well. Now Ive got my other brother coming to stay so hopefully will be able to do the same thing! It hasnt bothered anyone who has come over the response is mainly excitement and oo i get to play with a bird that wont bite me lol

Hope that answered your questions lol

Ps found this one you can always pause it before it gets to where the bird is near her face.

MissK wrote: I had to put my oar in when I saw the word "cat". I know there must be plenty of trustworthy felines out there, but I wouldn't take the chance. I have friends who kept a Quaker (aka Monk) Parakeet. They got a pair of kittens, thinking to raise them in the home with the bird so they would accept the bird. Didn't happen that way. As very young adults, the cats had all day at home to plot their attack. After the "Incident" the humans couldn't accept that they, themselves, were to blame. They found fault after fault with the cats until they were rehomed.

If my bird ever has to share space with a cat, you can bet I'll be holding one or the other the whole time.
When Janey was about 6 months old, I took her to a birdy boarding facility. She stayed there for three days. When I dropped her off, their cat came and sat right beside the cage. That completely freaked me out. The lady assured me that the cat was merely curious and wouldn't hurt the birds. I'd say she was right because they have a plethora of birds. However, I was worried that Janey would be freaked out by the cat! My belief is that it is possible to have cats (and dogs) that will get along with birds... but it doesn't always work out and there is some risk involved. Just recently whilst I was looking for videos of people interacting with IRNs positively, I found one of a cat and a budgie - the budgie evidently in love with the cat - and the cat very tolerant of the budgie! In the case of my friends' cats though, I will still well clear because they have never been introduced to pet birds before and who knows how they will react.

Regarding travel cages, we have a smallish cage that I can just fit in the car. It's their holiday cage - it's probably a tiny bit too small for a holiday cage for two birds, but any bigger and we wouldn't be able to fit it in the car. Because it's hard to get in and out of the car, I only tend to do it when I have to. So I'm thinking a travel cage might be best. I adapted a cat carrier for Janey when she was a baby... and we tried taking her just about everywhere with us for a while. That is, until she got her head stuck between the bars!!! I think that night was one of the most traumatic ones in our lives! My husband eventually cut the bars, which was really hard to do considering the wire cutters were right next to her little neck! It all worked out well in the end and my husband was the hero that night! It could also explain some of Janey's neurosis! So... I will NEVER be a cheapskate and adapt another animal's carrier again, I will buy a proper bird one this time!

I will have to create that bloopers reel soon!
