Thanks Ellie. They are starting to eat a lot now. Putting in a bowl of fresh soft foods for them everyday, there used to be leftovers, now they are eating it all and I have increased the amounts. They are going to be strong, healthy little birdies :D Taking them out this weekend for handrearing. Can't wait!!! :)

The chicks are eating it or the parents are eating it and feeding it to them? Do you put the food in the nestbox? How old are they when you pull them for handrearing?

The parents are eating it and feeding it to them. I place the food in a bowl just inside the door to their avairy. I will pull these little guys on either saturday or sunday. They will be 16/17days then.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought you meant the babies were eating it themselves which greatly surprised me! :o

Good luck with the handraising.

Latest update. Pic was taken yesterday, they were 13 days old. See how on the wings you can see little 'quills' starting to poke through. They are growing in leaps and bounds now.

This is the latest pic. It was taken this morning(25 days old) before leaving for work. My mom was going to feed him for me, so his crop is empty in this one. Two of the babies went to their new homes this weekend, this little one is going on thursday to its new forever home. It is the youngest of the 3.

More babies started hatching on thursday evening. When I checked the box yesterday(sunday) there were 4 little babies inside. Their mom is very skittish, so will show pictures when I take the babies out of the nest.

Hi everyone.

Managed to get a pic. The mom was off her nest when I took the soft foods in so snuck a quick peek. The male is a grey green cinnamon, hen is a lutino. The babies started hatching on the 23/08/2012. Last one hatched on the 27/08/2012.

Image

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Another pairs eggs started hatching on the 28/08/2012. Yesterday when I checked the nest and took soft foods in 2 of the 3 eggs have hatched. The male will be 2 years in november, he is a turquoise blue(handreared) and has no ring as yet, hen is a blue.

Here is a pic of the male guarding his box, he is not scared of us and thankfully doesn't attack. He just makes sure you are not doing anything to his babies.

And here is a pic of his 2 babies so far.

Have 6 pairs with eggs due to hatch this weekend. Going to have my hands full :)

Hi Lushen

I actually tried taking photos yesterday but because of the weather it is too dark in their boxes, and when you put the flash on it washes out all the colour. As soon as it clears up again I will take more.
Atleast the cages came in use for someone lol.
Buttercup is a very good mom. I may have to pull the chicks earlier than planned though because they get fat and grow so quickly.
I now have 7 pairs with babies. 3 lots I think the eggs are either infertile or not sitting correctly. Will pull the eggs this weekend coming.

Hi everyone

Have picture updates although not the best. The weather has been miserable and I am unable to open some of my boxes as the wood has swollen and the doors are wedged closed. I was able to open the majority using a knife to wedge open the door. The 1 I was unable to open at all so put my camera through the hole and took a photo from above  . This weather is getting a little tiresome.

Here are buttercup and lemons' babies. They are ranging from 12-17days now
Image

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I have now taken them out the nest for handrearing

Here are baby blue and bee's babies. They are around 12 days old now. I could not open their box.
Image

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Here are jellytot(lutino) and limes'(cinn clearhead fallow) babies. They are ranging from 10-12days
Image

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Here are zack(blue/cinn pallid) and cody's(albino) babies. They are ranging from 7-9days
Image

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Here are romeo(blue) and juliets'(turq blue cinn) babies. They are ranging from 8-9days
Image

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Here are tux(df grey blue) and snowy's(albino) babies. They are ranging from 3-5days
Image

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I did not take any photo's from my green pair, popeye and olive. They are my oldest pair and have not had babies for the previous 2 years. They had 4 eggs and 1 little guy hatched. I tried not disturbing them too much this year and only checked on her when she laid her first egg. It seemed to have done the trick.

Juliet was starting to look a little too skinny for my liking so I pulled her babies. She was obviously feeding all her food to the four babies and not eating properly herself. This is my first year with this pair and she is the only hen that had lost so much body weight, my first time seeing that. I give them large helpings of fresh fruit, veg, egg food and soft foods daily when they have babies, there is never a moment when there is no food in the avairies so this is something very new to me when it comes to juliet.

Hi all

Just a quick update. Juliet is looking much better. She has put on weight again since taking her babies put.

This pic was taken of tux and snowys babies at day 15. Last week friday. Our mulberry trees are starting to bear and drop fruit above their avairy so the babies have it smeared across their faces and Snowy does not look like an albino anymore

This picture is of jelltots and limes babies on day 26 taken yesterday.

Another breeder came and collected 6 babies over the weekend. 2 from zack snd cody, the blue and 1 blue pallid, and the four from romeo and juliet. I never managed to take pictures before they left.

2 of buttercup and lemons babies went over the weekend too. 1 green which the lady has called Pico. Another lady took the grey green although I have not heard what she has called him. They are apparently doing well and eating like horses. Will post picture updates for as many as I can tomorrow.

1 of baby blue and bees babies went yesterday. Will ask for pic updates here too.

Sorry not that many pictures for today. Had a very hectic long weekend :)

Hi Carmen,

Just love seeing the new pics everyday of your little sweethearts!! They are so cute! I have been following this thread, (and Lushen's 'Pairings for 2012' for the last couple of days now, and finding them full of interesting information on the process of breeding and hand-rearing.
At the moment, we are just happy to enjoy the company of our new adoptee, Skittles (an older bird, not hand-reared) who is developing quite a personality as he grow's more comfortable with us. But if we ever decide to take the next step and look at getting into the breeding side of things, it is nice to know that this forum is here, with lots of knowledgeable and helpful people around.
Thanks so much for all your input into these threads :)

Hi Myrka2004
I have a tendency on naming all of my birds. There is not one on our smallholding that does not have a name lol.
Buttercup, the hen is a lutino. Lemon, the cock is a golden cherry(grey green cinnamon). The 5 babies that were hatched came out as: 2 green, 1 cinn green, 1 grey green, 1 cinn grey green.
Thanks

Hi :)
Your baby looks grey green cinnamon(golden cherry) to me, but without the flights I can't be 100 percent sure. I am also not a mutation fundi like molossus, johan, madas and recio. Your baby is also only going on 5months now, after his/her 1st moult you will see the colours better. Even my youngster is a little patchy at present. With the genetics of the parents I honestly can't see how it could be a pied unless there is something further down in the history. Did you ever see the dad? Was he just a standard green?
Thanks

Thank you a lot...I was thinking this way too... that my baby look same as grey green cinnamon by picture mention.
Don't see in real my baby's father, but breeder was said that is Green split to Lutino.
Anyway, thanks to you ....will wait for his/her molt ....
yesterday was asked Madas too, but he not responded yet....
