Seed Diet

Post by TomAndGene »

Hi there, My IRN Gene is roughly 5 months old and trucking on well

I just have a question or two about his diet,

I currently have two bowls that are hinged on the side of the cage, One contains water, the other sunflower seeds.
I've tried different seeds but he just digs his beak in and flings them out while searching for the sunflower seeds.

To stop the mess i got a couple of bags of Sunflower seeds and now i just put about 2cm of them in his food bowl.

Is leaving him alone to eat as many seeds as he wants a bad idea? I give him fresh, sliced cherries carrots and apples now and again and im sure to remove seeds etc and wash them down.

So Yeah, Is leaving quite a large amount of seed around for him to access 24/7 a bad idea, or should it be portioned correctly?

Thanks, Tom. :)

Very good question. I encourage you to read this article: http://www.rationalparrot.com/diet.html to help you find your answer and to help round out your IRNs diet. With so much sunflower seed, he would be on his way to being overweight and malnourished.

For a comprehensive list of foods to feed your IRN and more links, check out http://www.indianringneck.com/forum/vie ... f=3&t=8078

Try to get a seed mix with safflower seeds instead of sunflower. I only use sunflower seeds as a treat here at home. :)

Happy feeding!

I've been called 'birdbrained' before, but somehow I don't think this is what they meant. say:hah-nay
