Opaline pallid?

Post by McmillanBirds »

Hi all

I was wondering if it was possible to get a blue opaline pallid?

I know the pallid takes away colour from the head and the opaline makes the head darker, but whether these 2 mutations can mix.

Thanks Madas :)

For an untrained eye in mutations, what would be the most distinctive feature for this mutation? The flight feathers?
Would a normal pallid have greyish flight feathers, whereas with the opaline gene it makes that triangular white patch on the flight feathers with the grey around it?

Reason I ask is because i bought what I thought was a blue pallid from a petshop. Was a complete ugly duckling and very ruffled(obviously not used to being in a small cage). After about a month of having it, it smoothed out and became a fairly good looking bird. After having it for over a year I found out she was female as she took a fancy to her neighbors male. I have not paired her as yet. I have been looking into mutations for the last few months when I stumbled onto a sight with a basic breakdown of mutations(home.wanadoo.nl/Psittaculaworld), on there was the Opaline. I was looking at my blue pallid this weekend when I noticed her flight feathers, light grey with the white triangle type shape and it got me thinking. Unfortunately I have absolutely no history on the bird.

I intend to take proper photos of her wings when I move her into a different aviary, so that I can post them and get others perspective, as my eye is untrained and I am new to this.

Thanks again

Carmen post a pic. If she's opaline it would be fairly easy to verify.

Hi Molossus

I managed to get 1 or 2 really good photos of her with my camera, so better quality, only to get to work and realise I left my camera cable at home( I don't have internet at home and to work off of my phone isn't the most convenient), so I will post the pictures up next wednesday( long weekend after today).

Many thanks

Hi Carmen, I would be very surprised if you purchased an opaline pallid in a pet shop.

Enjoy the long weekend, and travel safely!

Hi Johan

So would I to be very honest with you but just out of curiosity and her flight feathers look a little different to some of the pallids I have seen. I would be happy with her regardless though.

Have a wonderful weekend too

Hi everyone :)

The much awaited pictures:

This was when she was a year old:

I have a question about another bird of mine though. I thought he was a pallid albeit a little darker than my female, Lacey, but a guy came to look at my birds over the weekend and he said that Lime was cinnamon clearhead fallow. Would someone please clear the air for me because if that is the case I have no bird to pair to him. Here are some pics:

Sorry for all the pics and questions. There is also a pic of Lacey attached so you guys can see the difference between the two. I can't quite get the exact colour of Lime, I have tried but the pics don't capture the colours as nicely. His body and that is like cinnamon green with the dark yellow head.

Thanks for everything

Carmen, looking at the photos, I agree that one could wonder whether this bird carries the opaline mutation. I would really like to see a picture of the full tail, as well as an "open wing"-photo. The last will be difficult to get, and would most probably require you to catch the bird. Even considering the photo from the website that Madas posted, I'm not 100% convinced about the opaline-pallid crossover. However, I'm sure that that particular bird has been tested by mating/offspring results. Photos tell one thing, but breeding results tell the truth (think of a grey bird on a photo, yet producing 50% violet offspring). What you should do is mate her with cock carrying the opaline mutation. If she is only pallid, they will breed only opaline hens. However, if she is indeed a opaline-pallid crossover, they will also breed opaline cocks. Once you have that first opaline cock, you can conclude that your bird carries both mutations.

@Molossus: Come now, play nice! This is an open forum and we are all interested in your thoughts on the bird. :D

Hahaha I love this forum :D

Johan, as you said, the pic raises some interest. I am going to be attempting pictures of the wings spread over the weekend, underneath as well, I will get in a pic of her tail too just for you  I am dreading to know what my fingers will look like at the end of it though, I haven't quite mastered the art of holding a wild bird without being munched. I have seen how it is done, sometimes I am successful, other times they get in a good nip of flesh.

As to my male, Lime, I need to check on eye colour. It would be quite intersting if he turns out to be clearhead, I only paid R150 for him. Completely not what I expected at all!!!

Hey Johan,
Amazing what a little curry wors can do huh? I am inclined to believe that she's possibly hit a dbl jackpot on both birds. But we shall see. Good to have met you at long last. See you at the auction.

Here are the pics

Please excuse them, I was shaking like a rattlesnake because I was scared she might escape, the lighting is terrible and my mom can't take pictures to save her life.

I never managed to move her this weekend, ended up going to a combined 50th and 21st so I took the pics while feeding them yesterday afternoon.

http://img804.imageshack.us/img804/3960/picture125p.jpg

Looking at the underside I have a feeling she may not be opaline, but the lighting completely washed out her feathers.

Those birds of mine know what a net is, they all threw temper tantrums when they saw it coming

I will have to take better pics if these are insufficient at a later stage

Warm Regards

Me too. The last pic you have posted shows it best.

Image

Nothing more like a normal blue pallid. Sorry. But i you are unsure try to test breed her to an opaline male. If your bird is carrying the opaline gen then the whole offspring should be opaline. If not you will only get opaline females and normal visual males.
