Hey Guys,

I recently joined this site because I want to purchase an IRN and have heard lots of mix information about them.

Some people say that they are excellent pets while others say that they are a ticking time bomb and are very hard to handle. I have seen many youtube clips of gentle, talking and gorgeous IRN's however EVERY pet shop or breeder I talk to advise me to buy an Alexandrian or Eclectus or that the IRN must be hand-raised. The truth is, this is my first parrot (having owned many budgies and cockatiels in the past) and I dont want to spend hundereds of dollars. I have done lots of research and websites such as http://www.birdtricks.com suggest that with lots of time, patients and love any bird including IRN's cane become tame and lovable pets.

A local pet store has a few 10 month old aivery raised IRN's for sale however tells me that there is NO WAY i could ever tame them, when i am reading hundereds of stories of people hand-taming older IRN's.

I am well aware of the bluffing stages as well as the commitment needed and i am more than willing to put in the time and effort to give tis bird a happy and loving home.


I am going to look at a 8 month old unsexed Lutino (yellow) IRN today, the owner said that this bird was originally hand-raised however due to a few months without much human contact it has begun to bite again. He is selling it due to it not getting along with his Lorrikeet. The asking price is $40 which seems very cheap. any suggestions?


PS. What is the difference between the $50 IRN's and the $2000 split/pearl coloured IRN's? Is it only the colour that make them worth so much?

Where abouts are you?

If your local Im happy to show you my birds (both tame and not) so you can make an informed decision.

Its a big step getting a bird that can live up to 25 years, especially one that can be tempremental!

I went and saw the Yellow Lutino IRN and instantly fell in love with this bird. He/she is semi tame and is already eating from my hand. I can tell it is still very young as its beak is still dark Orange and not quite red yet. I'll post up an intro and pics soon

Thank you.. I was so happy to finally find a bird that is semi tame. He/she is already calling (whistling) at me and my parents for attention. We have been feeding it seed mix, apples, corn, pear and it loved some of my raisin toast this morning too lol from its physical features it looks like a male to me however I am inexperienced with IRN's hopefully when I get the chance to post some pics some of you can give me a better guess on its gender.

We have been spending a lot of time talking to it and making sure we sound out all the syllables of each word and it really seems to pay attention and listen to us when we speak. Hopefully it will talk some day.

Thats exactly what you want, you felt right with that particular bird and he/she thinks you are ok too.
Even if you arent try to let him think you are confident handling him.

As each day passes Tajj (what i named my IRN) seems to be more interactive with me and my family. We let it out of the cage the other day and Tajj was sitting on my lap and eating from my hand. I was able to patt its head but I got a few nipps but nothing too serious. From what i can tell, Tajj is starting to moult as there is a lot of downy feathers in the cage and finding Tajj a bit egdy some times.

Hopfully ill have time to take some pics and write up a proper into tomorrow.
