Hi there. My name is Claire, and I have an orange winged amazon parrot, and have today collected my ring necked parakeet. We saw the ringneck at our local pet shop and fell in love, and felt sorry for him as well as he was all on his own. Wont know for a while whether he is a male or female as he only 8 months old. However we are treating him as a male!! He has clambered round the top and front of his cage, and hs eaten some food. But he is very quiet. Our amazon is chattering away to him!! They are in separate cages the opposite sides of the room. It's early days so we are just sitting with him for a few minutes here and there gently talking to him. And we will go from there. He has tried out all of his perches which our amazon didnt do for a couple of days. We want to be able to let hi out of his cage, but how long do you think we should leave it before we do so? Does he have to be hand tame to let him out? Thanks for any advice in advance. He is green all over in colour with the red beak.Is that the right colouring for an indian ringneck? he seems to match pictures of ones I have seen.

Hi Claire, welcome to the forum and congrats on your ringie.

Each bird is different so there is really no set rule to abide by, just a guide that may or may not work.
Hand raised or even semi tame birds are obviously easier to handle than a aviary bird who little human contact. If you allowed him out of the cage and he is not tame, you are going to have a hard time returning him to the cage without stressing him too much.
Depending on your views re clipping, it could be one option (if not already clipped) to allow him out of the cage without the stress of chasing him flying around the house to put him back in the cage.
I personally prefer my birds left fully flighted but have clipped when necessary. Most times I only clip once (if I do clip) and let the feathers regrow.
Have you checked out 'Behaviour and taming' section of the forum? Maybe someone else has had a similar experience as you are having, you may get a few pointers in there.
