Closed foot when sleeping

Post by elpilota »

Hi all,

I have a 5 week old IRN called Rio and since yesterday I noticed that he "scratches" a lot his feet with his beak and when sleeping he closes his foot becoming like a closed fist so to speak. Is this normal? Also when is best to put him in a cage? Atm he's in a box with a lamp on to keep him warm all day.

Thanks!

I don't know about the babies, but for adults it is normal to hold one foot, closed as you say, up close to the body, inside the feathers, and stand on the other foot while sleeping. It's even a good way to tell if you've kept the bird up too long at night, as they may pick the foot up and look around a little cross. You'll know you should have put it to bed already.

Yes I know what you mean! I might have done so as I can't stop playing with him and I love it when he stays on my shoulder and sleeps :D thank you for replying!
