baby parrots picked from the next;sold unweaned

Post by strandedinpakistan »

I'll keep this brief.

-I want an alexandrine baby because I want a parrot I can actually handle for once.

-Most "breeders" and petshops here are looking for $$$$$$ and they pluck the (wild) babies from the nest

-Alexandrines are slowly becoming extinct in Pakistan because of that

-The sell the birds unweaned and I haven't known a single pet shop owner who goes through the effort of handraising their birds

What should I do? Babies are coming in about a week and I have to make a decision. If I do get them, it will be humane because I'll release them from the sh*t hole cages overpopulated with different breeds they live in at the pet stores. But if god forbid I do not succeed in giving this chick a happy life, it will be inhumane.

btw I already have a cockatiel which has never been handled. I don't know what to do with it as I don't want to return it to the cruel pet stores and nor does it want to bond with me. I'm thinking of buying it a mate but I don't have the money for that now.

Hi there,

Welcome to the forum.

I am from India and the situation is the same here. They remove the babies from the clutch of wild birds and sell them before they are weaned. Also let me add a fact that you missed. Almost 50% of the chicks die while in transit from the nest in the wild to the pet shop.

I have bought a similar bird and hand raised him. Now he is above 4 months old and properly weaned.

My intentions are to start the breeding of these beautiful babies in captivity and supply the pet trade with hand raised babies. I know it wont make much of a difference immediately but if people like you join in and start breeding these magnificent birds in India and Pakistan many wild babies will be saved from being seperated from their parents at an early age. If you find this a good cause join in and get the baby alexandrine.

You will get lot of information on this site and also suggestions if you face any problem.

Now for the cockatiel. If you know someone who already has a cockatiel and is willing to adopt your bird, Give it to him/her. Maybe breeding might take place and you might get a handraised chick who will let you touch it.

I agree with Subodh. I think you need to look after the needs of the bird you have before getting another bird. Either finding a new home with a mate or you could look for a hand raised tiel that you can tame and then be a companion for your tiel.

Good luck with your decisions.

Ellie.

Thanks for the reply :) I have sent you a pm mate. It's really difficult for other people to understand our culture and society regarding animals so I hope you can help me.
