Handling my ringneck

Post by samt78 »

Hi there, im new to this forum (and indian ringnecks) so i'd apprieciate some advice. I recently bought myself a young green ringneck from a person who handraises birds (not a pet shop). He said that these babies had just weaned, were very friendly and had previously been handled by children. The bird has both it's wings clipped. He will now be living in a tall, indoor cage with many different perches, ladders and rope toys. I work shift work (mainly nightshift) but have been handling it twice a day- I sleep most of the day so I handle it morning and evening. I handled this bird last night for about two hours while watching TV on the couch and this bird didn't once sit still or stop moving around. It doesn't seem to be stressed out too much, if it runs away from me it doesnt struggle or fight me if I grab it. This bird is like an acrobat as it likes hanging upside down on my hands, hanging by two feet, one foot or just its beak! It doesn't seem to bite too hard, but if it does it's not because its scared, but more to get a grip or pull itself up onto my hand/fingers.

Is it normal for this bird to be so hyperactive? Also, this bird is completely silent. I haven't heard one single sound from it. Is this normal?

I refer to this bird as 'it' because I dont know if it's male or female yet. I have named my bird 'Jesse' as this is both a boys name and a girls name.
