I hand-reared three peachfaces from one clutch when I was in high school. I probably did everything wrong... but they turned out ok. I remember panicking when we first took them out because I couldn't get them to eat... but eventually they did.... then I'd go to bed every night worried that they'd be dead when I woke up in the morning... My father wouldn't let me get up to feed them in the middle of the night. I only handraised them because we wanted to get the nestboxes out of the aviary to give the females a break until next season... but every time we tried another pair would have babies and we couldn't take them out... so in the end, I handraised them during my school Christmas holidays.

I haven't done any other hand-rearing. I will probably get a nest box for Janey & Charlie next year (Janey is currently 2 years old and Charlie is 1 year old) and see if we they want to breed.... providing I can get my husband to agree! I would love to handraise the babies if I have the opportunity.... so I'm soaking up all of this great knowledge... and learning heaps... and feeling bad about all the mistakes I made with the peachies!

awww lol how cute are you!! my first bird was an alexandrine and i hand reared him, had him for 3 days and he died :[ i was devo hey but the breeder called that morning to ask how he was and he told me the other babies from that clutch died too so it wasn't me that killed him thank god but when i got my second baby, yuffie, i was sooo worried about the same thing, waking up in the morning and she'd be dead but only because of what happened to vince!! so i'd put her box next to our bed of a night time hahaha and i'd get my bf to check her before he leaves for work in the morning but i've done a good job with her lol i hope!! she's a terror though!! but yes i still get like that, not so bad with these babies now because i've got more experience but i still get him to check them at 4:30 in the morning hahaha JUST incase lol.

aww that sounds good :] does your husband love the birds? i cant wait to breed :] im sooo excited lol me and my partner were talking about having a baby next year but i think i'd prefer having baby birdies LOL this is a great site! so much great info on here!

Congrats on your aviary... Looks great! Looks like you have the same colour combo that I do - male lutino & female blue. Providing your birds don't have any splits, you will get lutino and green babies (I think it's the females will be lutino and the male will be green... but maybe it's the other way around.)

My husband does love the birds... but he gets a bit scared of them. Our girl, Janey, is absolutely besotted by him but also likes to bite occasionally... and that has sort of spooked him... especially when she would bite his ear... so it's a bit sad, he's lost his confidence with them.... so I'm hoping we'll be able to build it up again over time.

Janey is such a puzzle to me. Most of the time she's loving and good.... and she's sooooo smart... she's learnt so many tricks.... but she can also be moody and I can't pick her moods.... you'll have weeks of great interaction... and then one day out of the blue, she'll lunge and bite when you aren't expecting it...... and, boy, will it hurt.... It reduces my confidence with her too.... to the point where I will pat her using my arm rather than my hand because it hurts less when she bites it.... it's really hard to get over the fear sometimes.

Well, good luck with the baby human and the baby birdies! I wouldn't mind having both next year myself! Will see what will happen!

The babies looks great. Shame you have to give them back!
They look a few days younger than my trio going by the feather stage.
How are they eating now?

Birds DO make a bit of a mess inside, don't they? I am forever cleaning their feathers and seed. Why do birds think it is fun to toss seed OUT of their cages????

omg yes hahahaha yuffie doesn't flick her seed but the other 2 were sooo bad for it lol

aw yes lol my bf was scared of birds. he never wanted me to get them but now he's so inlove with them lol he gets home from work and goes straight to yuffies cage to say hello to her, totally ignores me hahaha he's cute with them though! he wont touch the lil ones i've got atm though, he's not confident with them being that young! is it hard to teach them tricks? i want to teach yuffie to spin around but i dunno how to lol yeeeeeyuh good luck with you too hun :]

How did you go with the feeds and weaning?

My bubs get a bit fussy part way into feeds as well. Seems like one day they are eating fine the next, do not want a bar of it. I add small amount of cooked mashed pumpkin, carrot, sweet potato, or mashed apple etc into the mix to try and change the taste for them. I also introduce soft foods like soaked or sprouted seed, millet sprays or even small amount of peas, corn etc.

I am guessing when this was last posted the chicks would have been between 5-6 weeks old and beginning to start dropping their food intake slightly ready for take off. :D
