Determination, and Foraging

Post by rebecca malka »

I hope you enjoy these films of my IRN's eating, and eating, and eating even some more!!! Instead of posting a lot of individual threads I most some all together. I hope you don't get tired of watching them eat. Caution!!!!You may get hungry!!!

Determination in eating what they have foraged for. They do not give up that easily, at least they are occupied today!!

My birds I admit are spoiled. Everything is served to them in an orderly manner. Whatever food they like they get. Every now and then I like to allow my birds to be just that. Birds of wild, short of actually letting them out of the aviary, I make sure that they have their foraging instincts up to par. How do I do this? That is easy, just as when the palm trees are loaded with dates in the late summer and early fall, when I put whole branches in the aviary. In the spring and winter I put the branches of the cedar pines in the aviary and they have to pick off the nuts. It keeps them occupied and they have to work for their dinner!!!!

Foraging, we have to feed the birds!

Everyday I change the birds salad ingredients. Yesterday was apples red and green, pears, cucumber, pomegranate seeds, cranberries, and lettuce.....Today, while the birds were eating their breakfast salad of pomegranate seeds, dates, shredded beets, shredded carrot, lettuce, and corn, they were silenced momentarily not by a cat as usual, but of a bird of prey, not familiar to them carrying its chick in its beak. This is the first time I have seen this bird, and I will have to see if I can identify it. It was either some type of owl or a common kestrel. It flew by in a flash that I only caught a brief glimpse.

Holidays are time for celebration, gathering around the table to enjoy a feast and to gather around the Holiday tree. Here the birds gathered around their special tree for the holiday and had a feast.

Well, Goldie has settled in nicely and is having a relaxing time watching the "Wild birds" flying around. At the same time she is enjoying her breakfast of Pomegranate seeds. She has been with us for only 36 hours now and boy oh boy, what a change from when we brought her home. Goldie you are one beautiful welcomed addition to our flock, and BYW it seems that Charlie keeps following you around and you don't send him away as you do the other single birds. LOL.....

Great job! I loved the videos. And the foraging "trees"! Awesome!

Those are the seed thingamabobbers from palm trees right, that you used for the tree kabobs? I'm working on a plan to do something similar now- great idea!

I've been called 'birdbrained' before, but somehow I don't think this is what they meant. say:hah-nay

I am glad that you enjoyed the films. Florida has weather almost the same as Israel. Only thing it is hotter and more humid here.

What I use as skewers are wire covered with plastic. Similar to that of let's say a wired mesh fence, the green kind used in gardens. You can get the wires from any hardware store or construction site, pliable, colorful, sturdy and economical.
