adopted breeders

Post by Birdbrainz7 »

I just adopted a pair of older breeder IR's and don’t want them to breed. They are in a cage about 3'x2'x4' without a nest box but I noticed them getting VERY friendly with each other. I don’t want to keep them in different cages and was hoping because this cage isn’t a flight cage it would help deter them. Has anyone else had their IR's breed in a non flight cage? I have heard some will even lay eggs on the cage floor.

Hi,

I have got my first couple of IRN several years ago in a little bird cage of 50x50x100 high cm. It was the present of a friend moving away. At that moment I had not enough place for a bigger one and I decided to hang on the wall, at the outer part, a nestbox of 35X35X60 high cm, just thinking that they will never breed but the nestbox will increase the total volume for them. Big SURPRISE several weeks later: 5 eggs ..... and 5 chicks.

I hope you have the answer to your question. Yes, they can breed but try to get a much bigger cage.

Cheers
