how do you know if an egg is fertile

Have you ever heard of candling? What my husband and I do is use a pen light in a dark area. Gently take the egg and put the pen light up against it. You should be able to see veins running through it. If the egg is empty it will be yellow. Make sure enough time has passed (several days if not a week). It is much easier to tell at that point.
