Lenny's Escape!! And how we got him back!

Post by lenny_hayes »

On the 29th of August at around 5:30PM, Lenny flew off my mum's shoulder. After searching everywhere around our house for 4 hours, we had no luck. So we decided to go inside and wake up at 5:30AM to try and find him.
We had left the cage out all night hoping he would come back to it during the night, but he didn't.
Mum woke up at 5:30AM and left me asleep because I hadn't gotten to sleep until 4:30AM.
I woke up at 6:00AM and raced out of bed and went to mum, she looked in all the trees and had no luck.
I didn't want to believe it.

So I printed around 60 flyers, and posted them EVERYWHERE! I still had no luck when I came back home. Waiting for a phone call or to hear his squawk outside. Nothing happened.
So when my dad woke up we went out and searched everywhere, high and low, and we still had no luck. So we went to one of our neighbours house's, who has had birds his whole life and grew up with them. He said that if Lenny's wings were just growing back that he wouldn't be that far because he isn't fit for flying, but he also said that there are many predators around and he wouldn't have a chance against them because he is so tame. He told us to search everywhere around the house in a grid pattern. And still couldn't find him, we were whistling and calling his name, but he didn't come.

When we went inside to get a drink, I heard a bird that sounded exactly like lenny, so dad and I raced to the tree in my neighbours yard, but all we saw was 2 wattle birds, chirping away. When we gave up and went back inside, I heard it again, and again. We went to the tree around 5 times and kept looking for him. And on the 6th time we found him, sitting at the very top of the tree, about 12 metres high in a gum tree. He blended in with he clouds above him so he was hard to see, but he was there.

So dad climbed up a ladder and into the tree with a corn and apple, after spending a night outside, lenny was bound to be hungry!!
Lenny got afraid of all the comotion and glided all the way to a tree in our yard. So we stuck 2 four metre poles together and put corn on the end. After many failed attempts of trying to get him down, mum and I got a chair, and mum stood up and held the stick up to lenny , which reached the branch that he was at, and lenny, who was so hungry, stepped down onto the pole. It was very hard to guide the stick down to the ground because the tip was very wobbly. But we got him down and then raced to put him back in his cage.

Tips if you have lost your bird:
1. Never give up or lose hope.
2. Search around your house in a grid pattern, if he's wings were just growing back from being clipped, he/she won't be far, as they are not fit for flying.
3. Don't give up becuase there have been birds that have come back after a month to their owners.
4. Remember he/she will be hungry, they won't be able to find food in the wild.
5. Place his cage outside with the door open, and his favourite food. As the cage is his home.

Hey Mike, Lenny is an albino male (so he blended in with the clouds and hid behind leaves!) and we have learnt a lesson about getting his wings clipped more regulary!!
As I am new to this site I am having trouble uploading a picture. But will as soon as possible.
We were very very lucky to get him back and he is getting his wings clipped tomorrow at the vet!
He was gone for 22 hours overall before we got him back!
Poor Len!

I'm glad too! :D I was about to go up to the shops and buy a tattslotto ticket!!
Photos of Lenny up in the tree will be posted tomorrow afternoon for any of you that wish to see.
My family and I are so happy that we got him back! And when Lenny got back inside and ate some fruit and seeds,
he was chirping and whistling at us! Soon after that he went to sleep though, after 22 hours of outside in the cold, he had to be tired!
Thank god the weather was great yesterday when we got him, it was a beautiful sunny day. We were afraid he was going to die overnight from getting too cold, as Ringnecks can't take cold well from being in a warm place to cold.
As soon as we got him down from the tree we raced inside with him.

He is booked in for his wings clipped tomorrow!
And many thanks to my wonderful neighbours who helped get him down.

Here is a photo of Lenny in the second tree he visited, he flew from the tip of the 12 metre tree to a smaller tree in our front yard. This is the photo of him enjoying the sunshine in our yard, never planning to come down!!
