My new bird

Post by Valda »

hi my name is Norman. I am new to IRN.COM this is my first post, Buttons a 15 year old blue socialised ringneck came into my life, Buttons loved the ladies and treated men with contempt.Sadly at the age of almost 30 years Buttons passed away . I have since acquired a 4 month old green rinkneck named Figgie. We have been told that she fell out of the nest and was found and taken to the local vet. As she is still unsocialised and very nervy I need advice on how to go about socialise and tame her and then go on to training. Any help would be appreciated.

It will Not be easy. My bird was semi feral, on that he was aviary hatched and parent reared. Now, only after 7 yrs will he condescend to perch on me. I am totally against wing clipping, and would Never advocate it. Build up trust and confidence, sit by the cage and talk, sing and engage with your bird, offer treats through the bars, eat your food next to the cage, but only do what is necessary when you clean the cage, don't drag it out so the bird is terrorised, it's cage is it's bolt hole and sanctuary.Be prepared to wait,

hi Sanjay thanks for your advice, i take note of what you say re.letting Figgie be until she settles down. i would very much like to train Figgie, but realise that this will be aslow process and much patience is needed.for this i am prepaired,i understand the first task is socialise and get Figgie used to me sanding or sitting next to the cage .Figgie has settled to a degree she allows me to approache the cage witout flapping around and screaming as she used to, if i stand or sit to close she climbs up the opposite side of the cage and hangs on the bars with her back to me, if i move around to face her she moves away from me. is it natural for th bird to hang continually on the side of the cage . looking forward to hearing from you god bless Norman

Yes it is, and it will last a few Weeks unfortunately, my bird was the same, slowly and quietly is the rule of thumb, and please don't set him back by trying to push him into anything, their angst biting draws blood!. I didn't let Sanjay out for a while either, I didn't want him crashing into things out of fear. You will know instinctively when he has settled.

Sorry for the delay answering, the difference is beak colour, African Ringnecks have a greyish colour beak.

Yes, but make sure the majority of his diet consists of fresh fruit and veg, nuts are a good addition too, especially walnut pieces,

I tried my Alexandrine parrot with bird sounds she thought l had got another parrot and attacked me, so l stopped playing the bird sounds. They are like children at bed times, once my hen refused to go to bed all night so as l sleep in a different room l left her to think about it, but in the morning she was still sitting on the back of a chair but when l had done her food bowls she went in and l slammed the door shut! How ever that evening at bed time she was already wanting to go to bed, l think she was awake all night the night before.

It depends on what they've been eating, and faeces are wet because they wee at the same time. If your bird is otherwise healthy and active, I wouldn't worry too much, but keep a note on what he's eaten so when they are green, you will know which food has likely caused it.

thank you Sanjay, figgie is lively and very active on occasionly i leave the cage door open and the moment i move away figgie makes straight for the open door and up onto the top of her cage, obviously she likes to be out of the cage is that a good sign.Figgie has settled down cocnsidebly and no longer moves away or turns her back oes wheh we get close to the cage,I would nqw like to begin to tame her what route should i take thanks and God bless Norman+

I have never deliberately tried to tame my bird, I allowed him to do things at his own pace, whatever he felt comfortable with, it's taken years, but there's no hurry, establish trust, let them bond with you, and eventually they will allow certain liberties, but trick training etc is definitely not for me. I enjoy my birds company, and figure that if I respect him, he will trust me.
